Portales Father Pleads Guilty to Murder-for-hire Targeting His Wife

ALBUQUERQUE—Cody Guss, 37, of Portales pleaded guilty Friday to an indictment charging him with using a telephone in interstate commerce to commission a murder-for-hire.
Guss entered his guilty plea without the benefit of a plea agreement.
Guss was arrested March 27, 2014, on a criminal complaint charging him with using a cellular telephone in interstate commerce to commission a murder-for-hire. The Los Alamos Police Department Investigations Unit executed a search warrant Wednesday with assistance from New Mexico State Police at a residence in Ojo Caliente and arrested two suspects associated with a string of Los Alamos residential burglaries that have occurred over the past two months.

Pino Fire Underway in Jemez Ranger District
SFNF News:
The Pino Fire was reported Wednesday on Santa Fe National Forest’s Jemez Ranger District.
It is approximately one-half acre in size on a spur ridge. The fire is smoldering and no significant growth is anticipated in the next 24 hours.
No action was taken on the Pino Fire Wednesday because a flash flood warning had been issued for that area and access to the site is limited. As soon as fire managers are able to reach the fire area, they will determine an appropriate course of action.

TORGV Registration Is Open

The Tour of the Rio Grande Valley (TORGV) ride is Sunday, Sept. 14.
Registration is $60, ($15 late fee after Sept. 3–$75 total) and includes the ride with maps, rest stops, sag support, TORGV T-shirt and other goodies. Riders may register online until Sept. 12. Riders are welcome to register day of event (cash and check only).

Alert: Elevated Potential For Flash Flooding

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque reports an upper level disturbance will track slowly eastward over New Mexico today through Thursday. Abundant moisture in place and strong forcing for vertical ascent will result in widespread showers and thunderstorms, many with heavy rain.
Key Impacts:
- Stronger storms will produce torrential downpours with rain at rates near 2 inches per hour;
- The potential for flash flooding will be elevated in several urban areas that have experienced flooding, as well as near wildfire burn scar areas;
- Models forecast a broad cluster of storms
State Police Launch Checkpoints and Saturation Patrols in Counties Across New Mexico

New Mexico State Police will be conducting Sobriety Checkpoints, Saturation Patrols and Registration, Insurance and Drivers’ License Checkpoints in all New Mexico counties during the month of August.

The New Mexico Activities Association announced this morning that Executive Director Sally Marquez will take the “Ice Bucket Challenge” at 3 p.m. Wednesday Aug. 13 outside the NMAA office in Albuquerque.
The challenge involves an individual getting doused with buckets of ice water on video, posting that video to social media, and then nominating others to do the same, all in an effort to raise ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) awareness.
