LAFSE Hosts ‘Meet & Greets’ Monday for Gubernatorial Candidate Howie Morales

The Los Alamos Federation of School Employees (LAFSE) will hold a “meet and greet” for its endorsed gubernatorial candidate, Sen. Howie Morales 4-5:30 p.m. Monday, April 28 at the Los Alamos High School Speech Theater.
A reception will follow, hosted by LAFSE President Ellen Mills and Karyl Ann Armbruster, former LAFSE president, 6-7:30 p.m. at Armbruster’s home at 605 Totavi to allow additional opportunity to meet Morales. Refreshments will be served.

Filter Bank Mock-up Complete; HEPA Filters Arriving at WIPP

Experts from the Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site have arrived in Carlsbad to train WIPP employees on replacing the high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters – a crucial component of the WIPP Ventilation System.
New filters are required to replace those that captured material following the Feb. 5 fire and Feb. 14 radiation event. Los Alamos Team 4-H planted 49 Ponderosa Pine seedlings Saturday at the Los Alamos County Stables on North Mesa as part of their community service project for 2014.
The group obtained the seedlings from the New Mexico State Forestry Conservation Seedling Program.

Energy Department Announces $15 Million to Help Communities Boost Solar Deployment

WASHINGTON, D.C.—In support of the Administration’s goal of doubling renewable energy generation for a second time by 2020, the Energy Department today announced $15 million to help communities develop multi-year solar plans to install affordable solar electricity for homes and businesses.

ESPAÑOLA—April 22-25, fire managers on the Española Ranger District will be conducting a prescribed burn to 1,760 acres of the Santa Fe National Forest, approximately 10 miles northwest of Española and 8 miles south of Abiquiu.
Smoke from the burn will be visible from Española, Abiquiu, Canones, Medanales, Chama Highway (84/285), and Highway 96. It is expected to settle into lower elevations and in drainage areas during the evenings, but should lift by mid-morning. After ignitions are complete, smoke will still be visible for a few days.
