FBI: 30 Year Prison Sentence For Convicted Killer

FBI News:

ALBUQUERQUE — A Farmington man was sentenced to 30 years in prison for his role in the brutal killing of a man on the Navajo Nation in 2020.

There is no parole in the federal system.

According to court documents, between Feb. 6-Feb.15, 2020, Tyran Begay, 40, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, helped confine and torture John Doe alongside Camille Damon and Ronald Belone by binding and beating the victim, and leaving his body exposed to frigid weather in a remote area near Smith Lake, New Mexico.

Upon his release from prison, Begay will be subject to five years of supervised release.

Winter-like weather made a brief appearance in New Mexico last week. The Jemez Mountains and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains were covered with a beautiful white blanket of snow at higher elevations. Good to see after such a dry winter  but just a drop in the bucket of what we need. 

Streamflow in the Rio Grande remains low. The streamflow at Cerro near the Colorado border was just 169 cubic-feet-per second.  

There will be no big spring runoff from Colorado. Snowpack in the Rio Grande headwaters is just 43-percent of normal.

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Public Education Department (PED) announced today that 78.04% of students in Cohort 2024—those who began ninth grade in the 2020–2021 school year—graduated within the standard four-year period. This translates to 20,375 students earning diplomas and reflects a 1.34 percentage point increase over the previous year.

BLM Seeks Input For November 2025 Sale Of Oil And Gas Leases In New Mexico And Oklahoma

SANTA FE — The Bureau of Land Management New Mexico State Office yesterday opened a 30-day public comment period to receive public input on plans to include 21 oil and gas leases, totaling 8843 acres. The comment period ends May 21, 2025.

The BLM completed scoping on these parcels in March 2025 and is now seeking public comment on the parcels and the related environmental analysis. The BLM will use input from the public to help complete its review of each parcel.
