New Mexico Unemployment Rate: 4.4% In February 2025

New Mexico’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.4 percent in February, unchanged from 4.4 percent in January and up from 3.8 percent in the previous year.

The national unemployment rate in February was 4.1 percent, up from 4.0 percent in January and up from 3.9 percent in February 2024.

Total nonagricultural payroll employment grew by 13,800 jobs, or 1.6 percent, between February 2024 and February 2025. The majority of gains came from the private sector. FBI: Newcomb Man Sentenced For Role In Fatal Altercation

ALBUQUERQUE — A Newcomb man was sentenced to three years of probation for his role in the death of an individual who died from a fatal stab wound during a drunken altercation. There is no parole in the federal system.

According to court documents, June 2, 2021, Leighton Spencer, 32, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, and two other individuals were at Spencer’s home, consuming a mixture of Gatorade and hand sanitizer, followed by beers, when an altercation between the two other individuals occurred. Part Of Abiquiu Lake Recreation Area To Close For Season

USACE News:

ABIQUIU — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Albuquerque District has announced that beginning April 1, 2025, the Swim Beach Section of the Cerrito Recreation Area at Abiquiu Lake will be closed for the season.

This closure will remain in effect until the recreation season ends on Oct.15, 2025. 

The closure includes the Swim Beach, Paddle Craft Launch Area and Group Shelters 4 and 5. 

Visitors will be permitted to park at the top of the hill in the Corral to the right before the gate and walk down into the Recreation Area.

State Police Arrest Ruidoso Teacher On 40 Counts Of Abuse

Lincoln County — New Mexico State Police (NMSP) Investigations Bureau arrested a man Thursday on multiple charges of child sexual abuse after an investigation that began in 2024. 

Dec. 11, 2024, NMSP agents were contacted about multiple alleged incidents of criminal sexual contact at the Mountain View Christian Academy in Ruidoso. The suspect was identified as Devin Henderson, 23, of Ruidoso.
