Fr. Glenn: Reflecting

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

It’s interesting to witness the paroxysms of many over Elon Musk becoming the first trillionaire—the launching of the SpaceX to public trading bumping him through that heretofore unattained ceiling. Of course, it’s a tenuous title; if the stock market takes a downturn or the economy goes into one of its periodic recessions, he’ll likely lose that trillionaire mark and only be worth several hundred billion … poor thing. Of course, most of his wealth is in stock and company ownerships (companies which employ tens of thousands of people, by the way: Tesla 134,000, SpaceX (including Read More

McQuiston: When The Smoke Shows Up … A Wildfire Guide For Los Alamos Families

By ALLEN MCQUISTON
Jemez Insurance Agency
Serving Los Alamos Since 1963

You usually smell it before you see it. A sharp pine smell drifts in through a window. Or a smudge of smoke shows up over the Jemez that wasn’t there the day before. You step outside, look west toward the forest, and reach for your phone to find out where it’s coming from.

If you’ve lived on the hill for long, you don’t need to be told this matters. Los Alamos has watched fire come over the ridge before. The dry weeks of late spring and early summer, before the monsoon rains arrive in July, are when it happens here. Most years it stays in

Home Country: Hotter Right Here

Home Country
By SLIM RANDLE

“Wonder what the count is today,” said Herb. “Sure is hot.”

We sipped simultaneously, as is our wont, and stared at our friend. “What count would that be?” asked Steve.

“The btu count, of course,” said Herb. “Those are British thermal units, you know. It’s how heat is measured.”

Leave it to Herb. There doesn’t appear to be any coffee-drinking topic that Herb can’t make completely obscure.

“I was just getting used to the difference between Fahrenheit and Celsius,” our cowboy, Steve, said.

“I always eat my Celsius with peanut butter on it,” said Doc.

“Doc made a joke!” came Read More

Catch Of The Week: Your Friend Didn’t Send You That Steam Gift Card

By REBECCA RUTHERFORD

For the Los Alamos Daily Post

Ding! You get a Discord message from someone you know. Maybe it’s a gaming buddy, maybe it’s someone from a community server you both hang out in. The message is friendly, casual, and comes with a link or QR code promising a free $50 Steam gift card. Sounds like a nice surprise, and in this economy we can all use an extra $50, right? That’s a big ol’ nope from me.

This scam has been circulating on Discord for a while now, but security researchers are flagging it with new urgency in 2025 because the tactics have grown more sophisticated and the Read More

Lynne: My Sincere Thanks To The Los Alamos Community

By STEVEN LYNNE
Candidate for County Council

Dear Los Alamos Community,

I wanted to extend my sincere thanks to the entire Los Alamos community. I recently returned from a week in Florida with my wife and daughters for our family reunion. As we watched the primary election results together, I found myself thinking about home and how much this community feels like a family to me. I deeply appreciate your support.

After 28 years of working for the county, including the last three as County Manager, and collaborating with many councils and councilors, this is my first time running for elected office. Read More

Dannemann: Haaland Needs A Broader Message Now

Triple Spaced Again

“The next governor must be laser focused on lifting New Mexico out of multigenerational poverty—the driver of all of our societal problems.” I am borrowing that line from a social media comment about the governor’s race.

There’s nothing wrong with being a single mother. But it’s not a sign of greatness either.

It’s a circumstance within the normal range of life’s possibilities. In itself, it is not a proof of qualification for anything else—certainly not the highest office in the state.

That’s why it’s worth noting that this Read More

The State Game and Fish Department stocked a total of 35,445 rainbow trout weighing 17,733 pounds. Most of the stocking will now be in Northern New Mexico.

Streamflow in the Rio Grande increased slightly and is still below average to extremely below average in Northern New Mexico. At Taos Junction Bridge, the streamflow Sunday, May 16, was 212 cubic-feet-per-second. The streamflow at Cerro near the Colorado border was 81.4 cubic-feet-per-second. The streamflow at Embudo was 206 cubic-feet-per-second

Fr. Glenn: Can There Be Too Much?

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

It’s funny how easily we toss around extreme phrases: “I gave everything I had?!” “You have to give 110%!!” But do we? Are we truly so generous of ourselves?

On the other hand, if someone were to chastise a parent, a child or a spouse: “You give too much love!”, I think most of us would think such phrase absurd. Love for another is the one thing that should be limitless. Certainly there are better ways than others to manifest love (not enabling self-destructive behavior for one), but, like God who IS love (1 John 4:8), the greatest love is that which has no end. Infinite.

When we’re thinking Read More
