Local Supplements to Operating Expenses

Representatives of Save Our Schools Los Alamos met with Deputy Education Secretary for Finance and Operations Paul Aguilar Friday, Nov. 22 to discuss a letter we sent to Secretary-Designate Skandera back in September.  The letter argued that the State of New Mexico should deal with its education funding crisis by allowing local jurisdictions to provide operating supplements to promote school quality above the minimum Read More

What I’m Thankful For This Year

Column By TOM GARRISON

Each November I compose and send to relatives and friends a “Thanksgiving Thankful List” for the preceding year.

My wife Deb and I enjoy our life in red rock southern Utah and have many things for which we are thankful. We hope sharing them brings a smile and an acknowledgment that even in tough economic times there are things for which to be grateful. Below is the 2013 list.

  • We are thankful for the invention of the non-kinking garden hose. (After considerable Internet research, I could not pin down the inventor. Even that font of online knowledge, Wikipedia, did not have an entry.)

Skin Care Column: Conquering Rosacea

Skin Care Column: Conquering Rosacea
By JUNE ENGLISH

Rosacea is a condition of excess blood (hyperemia) characterized by congested capillaries (erythema) and permanent capillary widening ordilation (telangiectasia).

Studies have shown that blood flow from the face via the veins to the brain, are suppressed in patients with Rosacea. Therefore, a functional impairment of blood flow and abnormal vascular response to heat and other stimuli may create changes in the facial skin leading to the disease. This is a serious condition that leads more than 13 million people to their dermatologists Read More

Why Pay Attention to Attendance?
By  KRISTINE KOBLENTZ

Why does your child miss school? Ask parents this question and you might be surprised at the variety of answers you receive.

  • “He needs a break and a day off once in a while.”
  • “She has so much to do, she needs to stay home to catch up.”
  • “He has a lot of trouble getting up in the morning.”
  • “She’s only a third grader. Surely she won’t miss much.”
  • “He isn’t feeling well. And he really hasn’t been acting like himself lately.”

A day off here, a few tardies there – these absences may not seem like much, but according to Attendance Works (a website Read More

A Thanksgiving Essay By David Izraelevitz

By DAVID IZRAELEVITZ, Vice Chair
Los Alamos County Council

“The only time we close is for Thanksgiving.” Many years ago, while traveling through a city I have long forgotten, I had stopped for dinner at a Chinese restaurant, where I overheard the owner chatting with a departing couple. “You’re not closed for New Year’s?” the man persisted. The owner’s heavy accent seemed to thicken with his emphasis. “We only close for Thanksgiving. It’s the only day.”

This time of year always brings back to memory that brief exchange. I never found out why Thanksgiving was the only special day for this family. Read More

Express Gratitude and Attract Happiness this Thanksgiving

According to Martin E. P. Seligman, Ph.D., a leader in Positive Psychology, and author of “Authentic Happiness,” one cause of low life satisfaction and contentment is failure to express gratitude and taking things for granted.

“Gratitude is an appreciation of someone else’s excellent moral character. As an emotion, it is a sense of wonder, thankfulness, and appreciation for life itself.”

Often in our busy lives we do not take time to acknowledge all the goodness Read More

I don’t listen to recorded music very often. That probably comes as a surprise to people who know that I’m the artistic director of the Los Alamos Concert Association (LACA).

I certainly listen to CDs as part of my work with LACA. I do listen to the radio and sometimes to a CD in the car, but I hardly ever put on a CD at home just for, I guess, fun.

This is, in part, because I can’t multi-task where music Read More

2013 – What a Year It’s Been

2013 continues on the path of very solid gains, but it has certainly has not been a smooth ride. Stocks and bonds have had to steer clear of geopolitical risks, budget issues, and the ongoing debt crisis in the U.S. In spite of these issues the stock markets have posted very strong gains.

Stocks enjoyed their best 3 quarters in a number of years, but the question is, will we be able to continue on this pace and for how long? Bonds hit some speed bumps in the second quarter, but low single digit gains still look possible. In any market, there are always Read More
