How The Hen House Turns: Streak, Chapter One

How The Hen House Turns: Streak, Chapter One
By Carolyn A. (Cary) Neeper, Ph. D.

In the early days of the Hen House, we had an animal explosion–lots of baby animals arrived to live in or near the Hen House. Streak was not part of that explosion, but she was a large part of our lives.

In those days, when oldest daughter Indra (“OD: in a previous story with all three daughters) needed a pet of her own.

You could adopt a skunk, if it had been raised five generations from the wild. This was supposed to dilute out the rabies virus that skunks might carry.

When we adopted her, Streak was just a baby, a

Help With The Hard Stuff: ‘Best of all Prevent’

Help With The Hard Stuff

Part 4 (of 10) –“Best of all Prevent”
By GINI NELSON, JD, MA

My last column introduced “third-sider” roles that might help you with the hard stuff. I also asked you to think about how a lawyer might help you prevent an escalation of conflict.

When there are latent tensions, intervention may prevent the tensions from erupting into violence. Many say prevention is the best intervention, and Ury suggests three prevention roles: Provider,Teacher, and Bridge-Builder.

Cross the threshold of these three opportunities, he says, and there is destructive conflict, violence Read More

Hannemann’s Music Corner: Yes … You Can …

Hannemann’s Music Corner: Yes … You Can …
Column by RICHARD HANNEMAN

I am often asked, “can I learn to play the guitar?”.This question is often accompanied with: “Am I too old?” or “I’m not really musically inclined”

The answer is Yes, you can.

You are not too old, there is no such thing as too old.

Money IQ: What is Mobile Banking?

Money IQ
By MONIE BLUM

What is Mobile Banking?

Mobile Banking is just what it sounds like, banking from a mobile device. Mobile banking allows customers to access their accounts anywhere, anytime, by texting their bank or credit union or by using their smart phone web browser.

Most mobile banking products allow customers to check account balances, verify transaction history, set up and receive automatic alerts and transfer funds within a user’s accounts. For added convenience customers can typically locate branch offices and ATMs.

Some banks or credit unions provide Read More

Yang: There Was (and hopefully is) Intelligence Out There In Management Land

There Was (and hopefully is) Intelligence Out There In Management Land
Column by ELENA YANG

After that bit of “rant” on “double bagging” last week, I really want to offer you a “good” story.

I am sure there are quite a few out there, but since I haven’t heard from anyone, I dug up an old story to share in this space.

The story is short and succinct. Way back in the late 40s, a manager employed “emotional intelligence” principle (a good topic for next week) and helped launch a group of brilliant scientists that invented the transistor at what was then Bell Labs.

Of course, mine is 20/20 hindsight based Read More

A View from the Stacks: Your Librarian – the Original Natural Language Search Engine

Column by VERONICA ENICINAS
Head of Reference, Mesa Public Library

Long, long ago, before the World Wide Web had matured and long before the miraculous search algorithm of Google was invented, finding the answer to your questions often involved consulting an encyclopedia – as well as a call or visit to your local library.

On one of those long ago days, a reference librarian was asked, “What are those little stringy things on the inside of banana peels called? You know, the ones that sometimes cling onto the banana after you’ve peeled it?” Well out came the botanical reference books and a search Read More

How The Hen House Came To Be … And Other Things, Like Goats

It must have been the summer of 1973 when Don built the Hen House. Our youngest daughter was about to have her sixth birthday.

She wanted a pet of her own, because, the year before, someone’s white rabbit had wandered into the yard. As a result, Santa Claus brought middle daughter item number one on her Christmas wishlist–two white rabbits, Sniffy and Pinkears.

Youngest daughter (YD) lucked out that next summer. The timing was right. Don had raised chickens as a boy

Hypno Talk: What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypno Talk
By KELLY MCLOUGHLIN

What is Hypnotherapy?

Let me introduce to you the most powerful self-help system known to man – Hypnotherapy!

What exactly is hypnotherapy and how can it help me, you may be wondering? Hypnotherapy uses the ancient art of hypnosis to put a client into a deep state of relaxation.

Once the client is relaxed completely the therapist accesses the most powerful part of the mind, the subconscious mind. This is where we hold all of our beliefs and memories.

Before we get too far down the rabbit hole let me explain a little about the mind, starting with the conscious mind. Our Read More
