PEEC Offers Hike to Veronica Springs with Dorothy Hoard

PEEC News:

On Saturday, July 7, Dorothy Hoard will lead a Natural Wonders of Los Alamos hike to Veronica Springs to see the wild Veronica that blooms in the seeping spring water. 

The hike is free and open to the public. Participants can meet at 9 a.m., at PEEC or at at 9:30 a.m., the trailhead at American Springs Road (Forest Road 181.)

PEEC’s Natural Wonders of Los Alamos series of outings aims at showing newcomers and natives interesting and beautiful places they may have never visited.

Bug Zoo Comes to Summer Family Evenings at PEEC

The Harrell House of Natural Oddities will be bringing some of the world’s most unusual creatures to PEEC at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday July 10, as part of PEEC’s Summer Family Evenings series.

The program is free for PEEC members, and $10 per family for non-members.

The Harrell House is a family-run business based in Santa Fe, and dedicated to educating the public about arthropods. 

The Harrells travel the country putting on insect shows and will bring their critters to PEEC Tuesday.

Family YMCA Independence Day Parade Planned

FAMILY YMCA News:

The annual Family YMCA Independence Day Children’s Parade will begin at 11 a.m., Wednesday July 4.

Youth should assemble for this free event at 10:30 a.m. in the parking lot on the southeast corner of Central Avenue and 20th Street.

The parade offers youth an opportunity to show their patriotic colors. Participants are encouraged to decorate bikes, favorite toys and family members.

Pets will be allowed in the parade but children must be able to restrain and clean up after them. No two-wheeled bikes will be allowed.

House of Hope Women Host ‘Pie in the Sky’ Dinner July 12

In support of the Trinity on the Hill-sponsored house-building mission trips to Juarez, Mexico, the House of Hope women are hosting a pot pie, “Pie in the Sky” Fundraiser Dinner from 5:30-7 p.m., Thursday July 12 in Kelly Hall.

The menu includes chicken and vegetable pot pies, salad and ice cream. (There also is a vegetarian option and a gluten-free option is available.)

Four Infant Slots Open at Bilingual Montessori

Infants enrolled at Bilingual Montessori School, 115 Longview Dr. in White Rock are graduating and moving up to the toddler’s room, which opens up four new spaces in the school’s infant building.

The 1,600-square-foot new building houses 12 cribs.

Bilingual Montessori provides preschool classes for children six weeks to six years of age, including kindergarten in a Montessori bilingual setting.

The members of the Rotary Club of Los Alamos are partnering with United Blood Services (UBS) to host a blood drive July 12-13.

The public is invited to participate in this life-saving activity.
