Governor, Attorney General, Environment Secretary, Trustee Announce Settlement With Final Contractors In Gold King Mine Litigation

SANTA FE — Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas, Environment Secretary James Kenney, and Natural Resources Trustee Maggie Hart Stebbins Thursday announced a $5 million final settlement with Environmental Restoration, LLC and Weston Solutions, Inc. in the Gold King Mine litigation.

ALBUQUERQUE — Wednesday, New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas announced that his office filed comments on the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Fire Assistance Act Regulations that were recently promulgated by the federal government.

TIERRA AMARILLA — New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas gas announced that former Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s Deputy Jeremy Barnes pled guilty to one felony count of false imprisonment.

As part of the plea agreement, Barnes must relinquish any law-enforcement certification and is not eligible to seek, obtain, or have employment in any law-enforcement position for the rest of his life. Sentencing has been set for Jan. 5, 2023 where Barnes faces up to 18 months in prison.

SANTA FE — New Mexico Supreme Court Justices Michael E. Vigil, Julie J. Vargas and Briana H. Zamora took the oath of office Dec. 14, during a private ceremony in the Supreme Court courtroom.

Senior Justice Vigil begins a new eight-year term Jan. 1, 2023 after being selected for retention in the November election.

AG Balderas: 85.5 Year Sentence For Serial Molester

ALBUQUERQUE — New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas today announced that Second Judicial District Court Judge Cindy Leos sentenced James Henz to 85.5 years in the New Mexico Department of Corrections. 

In September 2022, Henz accepted a plea agreement in which he was convicted of criminal sexual penetration, criminal sexual contact of a minor, and bribery or intimidation of a witness. ALBUQUERQUE — Alexander M.M. Uballez, United States Attorney for the District of New Mexico, announced Thursday that Martin Eriacho was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Eriacho, 52, of Zuni, New Mexico, and an enrolled member of the Zuni Pueblo, pleaded guilty Sept. 7 to assault with a dangerous weapon and brandishing a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence.
