PSAT Testing Scheduled for Oct. 16

LAHS News:

Los Alamos High School will administer the PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) 7:45-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16.

In accordance with the New Mexico Public Education Department mandate, all sophomores attending Los Alamos High School are required to take this test. It is optional for juniors.

The PSAT/NMSQT measures verbal, math and writing aptitude, and is recommended for juniors who will be taking the SAT later in the year.

I am concerned about the lack of funding for education in the state, and how it affects the quality of education in Los Alamos.

The community is committed to strong education, but the funding is not supportive of the quality that this town has come to expect. Considering that, for the last few decades, the great schools in Los Alamos have attracted and kept many families in this town, the quality of education is not just a concern for current parents, but for LANL, the county, as well as other community members. UNM-LA Community Education Classes Target History of Science

UNM-Los Alamos Community Education will offer two classes in September focusing on the history and popularization of science in Los Alamos.

Heather McClenahan, executive director of the Los Alamos Historical Society, will lead a class in the “History of the Manhattan Project.” The class will cover the compelling story of the individuals, institutions and forces that came together in Los Alamos during the development of the atomic bomb.

Memorial Fund Honors Los Alamos Teacher Jean Nereson

Los Alamos Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and the Nereson Family are offering an opportunity to honor Jean Nereson, an elementary school teacher for 50 years in Los Alamos County Public Schools and active AAUW member. 

Nereson was respected and loved by her students and she dedicated her 50 plus year career to their education and well-being. Travel to Area Known for Cretaceous Age Shark Teeth

It’s hard to imagine New Mexico was once under the sea, but during the Cretaceous Period, between 145.5 and 65.5 million years ago, much of the state was.

Because of this, remains of sharks’ teeth can be found at a site aptly named Shark’s Tooth Ridge near Cabezon, N.M.

UNM-LA to Host Fall Film and Lecture Series

UNM-LA News:

The University of New Mexico-Los Alamos (UNM-LA) English Department will host “Composition Cinema I: A Film and Lecture Series,” beginning Sept. 12 and running through Nov. 14.

The five films in the series were selected for their relevance to composition and comparative literature courses being taught at UNM-LA. The films will be hosted by a UNM-LA faculty member and will include a five to 10 minute talk discussing the film, its voice in the course’s theme and how it relates to life beyond the classroom. Afterwards, the host will take questions or open the floor to discussion.
