Snowshoe Hike In The Valles Caldera Saturday

PEEC is working with the Valles Caldera National Preserve (VALL) to offer educational, family-friendly, hikes this winter. A VALL ranger and a PEEC representative will lead a 2 – 2.5 hour, easy-to-moderate snowshoe hike. Along the way, participants will have the chance to learn tricks and tips to navigating by snowshoe, understand how plants and animals adapt to cope with winter, and explore the complex geology of the Jemez mountains.

Santa Fe National Forest Announces Road Closures On Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District

SANTA FE ― The Santa Fe National Forest has issued a seasonal road closure order for several Forest Service roads and areas on the Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District that are susceptible to damage under severe weather conditions. The order is in effect until Dec. 31, 2022, unless rescinded earlier.
 
The closure order will protect public health and safety, natural resources and infrastructure during periods of extreme soil moisture and heavy snowfall. Closures usually occur in the winter months between January and April.

State Police Investigate Fuel Spill Near Eagle Nest

Eagle Nest – Around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27, a commercial motor vehicle (CMV), operated by the Fronk Oil Company (Booker, Texas), was traveling westbound on US 64. At mile marker 290, approximately five miles east of Eagle Nest, the vehicle slid off the north side of the roadway and into the Cimarron River, which was located alongside the roadway.

BLM Announces Call For Nominations To Wild Horse And Burro Advisory Board

The Bureau of Land Management today issued a call for public nominations to fill three positions on its national Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board.

To be considered for selection, nominations must be received via email by Feb. 10, 2017, or postmarked by that date. The BLM published its request for nominations in the Federal Register.

Nominations are for a term of three years and are needed to represent the following categories of interest: public interest (equine behavior), wild horse and burro research, and natural resource management.

The Backcountry Film Festival is returning to the Reel Deal Theater in Los Alamos for the sixth year in a row.

Produced by the Boise, Idaho based nonprofit Winter Wildlands Alliance, the touring Backcountry Film Festival will make its way to more than 100 locations around the world.

Playing At Nature Center Planetarium This Weekend

At 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 31, Exploding Universe will play in the Los Alamos Nature Center Planetarium. This family-friendly film will take the audience on a voyage through space to explore explosive events that shaped the Universe.

The nature center is closed New Year’s Day, Jan. 1. Otherwise, the nature center will be open regular hours: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday as well as 1-4 p.m Sunday. The nature center is closed Thursdays for regular maintenance.
