UNM-Los Alamos (UNM-LA) offers programs that train students to meet specific needs in our community, including the fields of emergency medicine and health care.

In 2013, UNM-LA developed an Emergency Medical Services (EMS) program. In 2016, the college began offering the Personal Care Attendant (PCA) program, and then in the Spring of 2017 the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program was added. Transfer programs in Pre-Professional Health are also available.

Twelve teams have registered to participate in the 2017 Los Alamos Relay for Life, which kicks off with an opening ceremony at 9 a.m. Saturday at Ashley Pond Park.

The event raises money for the American Cancer Society and the community is invited to participate in a number of ways. In former years, Los Alamos Relay for Life teams have walked throughout the night, however, this year participants may begin to walk at 10 a.m. and can walk for whatever amount of time they wish between 10 a.m. and the 9 p.m. closing ceremony.

New Mexico Suicide Rate Declines In 2016

The New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) reports a six percent decrease in the number of suicides in the state in 2016. The decrease reverses a trend of rising suicide rates in New Mexico over the last three years.

There were 469 reported suicides in New Mexico last year, down from 498 in 2015.
