Udall, Heinrich Statement on DOE WIPP Radiological Release Investigation Report

U.S. SENATE News:

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich today issued the following statement on the release of the Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management initial accident investigation report related to the Feb. 14 radiological release at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) near Carlsbad.

Filter Bank Mock-up Complete; HEPA Filters Arriving at WIPP

Experts from the Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site have arrived in Carlsbad to train WIPP employees on replacing the high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters – a crucial component of the WIPP Ventilation System.

New filters are required to replace those that captured material following the Feb. 5 fire and Feb. 14 radiation event. Terry Foxx, a master storyteller and former Laboratory employee, will discuss the ecology of the Jemez Mountains and the Pajarito Plateau noon to 1 p.m., April 23 at the Bradbury Science Museum as part of the museum’s Brown Bag lecture series.

 

Foxx will intertwine the evolution of her perspective about the natural world as a young girl, to working in a national laboratory, which was struggling with newly instituted environmental laws of the 1970s. Compliance with those laws required an evolution of perspective for project managers.

Energy Department Announces $15 Million to Help Communities Boost Solar Deployment
