Letter to the Editor: Public Shaming Should Stop

By AMANDA BARRY
Los Alamos

The posting of mugshots and names from the Police Beat (Los Alamos Police Blotter) and Local Courts Docket in the Los Alamos Monitor and Los Alamos Daily Post should be stopped.

Although we should all be aware of crime in our community, we do not need to list the names and post images of every person suspected of a crime or involved in a traffic violation. Many of these people may be found not guilty later, and these listings will be searchable for years to come.

This could affect future careers, especially of young people, as colleges are now performing internet searches

Letter to the Editor: Support New Mexico Airlines!

LEON AND ROSALIE HELLER
Los Alamos

LANL (Los Alamos National Laboratory) may not give preferred carrier status to New Mexico Airlines, but we certainly do.

When it comes to a choice between driving to and from Albuquerque or taking a 20 minute beautiful flight from Los Alamos right to the airport, we prefer flying every time. It’s a convenient, scenic and enjoyable way to travel compared with a two hour drive, shuttle bus, tips and parking fees.

We urge residents to support this great facility.

Letter to the Editor: Am I My Brother’s Keeper?

Am I My Brother’s Keeper?

By CATHY WIGET KING
Los Alamos

I’ve been proud to be an American all my life, except for the past 15 years or so. I watched speechless as we legalized abortion, the most heinous crime against humanity ever conceived in my opinion.

Instead of raising our children to abstain from sexual behaviors until they are married, sex is seen as cheap—and I do mean cheap—entertainment. The sacred nature of married love and family life has fallen by the wayside as marriages break up (because, oh gee, we aren’t in love anymore), and children self-medicate with

Letter to the Editor: Bus Driver Saves the Day for Dancers

By SUSAN WEATHERBIE
Los Alamos

A group of our dancers have been taking the Atomic City Transit down to White Rock a few times a week. On Wednesdays, they meet the bus across the street from Los Alamos High School and know to tell the driver that they need to connect with another bus at the Transit Center.

Yesterday the bus was a few minutes late and I was concerned they would miss their transfer connection.

I stepped onto the bus to ask if it was still possible to get them to White Rock on time. The bus driver was already on the radio to his supervisor and beckoned me to wait a moment.  Read More

Letter to the Editor: Another Bear Sighting

By GERALD ANTOS
Los Alamos

I was driving home from a Bible Study on Wednesday night and much to my surprise, I saw a bear munching down on someone’s trash in the middle of the 3200 block of Walnut Street.

I wish I had a photo, but bears are a lot faster at disappearing than I am at taking photos! I’ve heard about many bear sightings this fall and I really am glad to say that I am one. Read More

Letter to the Editor: Ashley Pond Is Real Success Story

By TOM SANDFORD
Los Alamos

On March 13, 2009, I wrote a letter to the Parks and Recreation Board members and the County Administrator about the sad state of Ashley Pond and what an eyesore it presented to the public.

Getting no response, I expressed my concern to the County Administrator and the County Counselors on April 13, 2009. Nona Bowman and Robert Gibson both immediately expressed support, and, along with many other unknown (to me) citizens, got the County moving on a plan to rescue Ashley Pond from its continuing deterioraton.

Once the County accepted the challenge, they did a wonderful Read More

Letter to the Editor: The School Employee with Low Expectations

By DAVID STRAATE
Los Alamos

Let me tell you about a woman I know.  She walks through the door each morning and her heart immediately fills the whole room. She smiles, hugs crying children, and runs copy after copy.  When an emergency arrives, she takes over any lesson and executes it so well I fear for my job security.

She works outside of school hours, coming up with project ideas. She spends some of the little money she has to buy gifts for the students on holidays. The kids love her like an aunt, and run to her when she enters the room.

She adds so much to the life of everybody she touches Read More

Letter to the Editor: County Commended for Indoor Arena

By Christina and Darril Stafford

We would like to thank the Los Alamos County for the use of the indoor arena.

Our daughter Hannah rides with the Therapeutic Riding group. This last Wednesday, Oct. 30, it was raining, sleeting and very windy. She does not like that kind of weather at all, yet she was still able to ride Dylan (Lisa Reader’s horse) for her lesson.

Thank you for this wonderful arena, it was perfect for this purpose.

Letter to the Editor: So Pleased With Ashley Pond Renovations!

By DIMAS M. CHAVEZ
Potomac, Md

I moved to Los Alamos as a young boy in August 1943. At that time Ashley Pond was just a simple pond with some green colored canoes that had been supplied by the Military to navigate the small area of water.

I was present at this pond when the first Los Alamos fatal accident happened when a young boy fell out of a canoe, got tangled in deep weeds and drowned.

Ashley Pond was always the center of town, next to the military hospital.

When I read in the Los Alamos Daily Post, a section I frequently view to keep abreast of what is happening in Los Alamos, that a major upgrade Read More
