Ozment: More Support For The School Bond

By CAT OZMENT
Los Alamos

In a town where things can get politically contentious, I’ve been delighted to see letters to the editor showing a broad consensus that we as a community support the school bond up for consideration in the ongoing election. People whose values often diverge on other issues agree that a vote for this bond is a vote for our kids, a vote for educators, and a vote for our community. I’m proud to add my voice to the chorus: vote YES for the school bond.

In short: this bond will not change our current tax rate, and it will provide matching funds for urgently needed capital improvements. Read More

Bjarke-McKenzie: Please Vote Yes For The School Bond!

By JUDY BJARKE-MCKENZIE
President
Los Alamos Public Schools Foundation

Having grown up in Los Alamos, so much has changed. Things in the community have changed so much and my memories keep the old Los Alamos tucked away for me to enjoy. One thing that did not change with the times was our schools. We have started to do some of that with the schools on the hill and now it is time for our White Rock schools.

All of our schools have aged and are aging so much, to the point of not being the place that we want for our children to learn and grow. After we get this done it will be up to us to maintain them and make sure they Read More

Gessing: New Mexicans Should Choose The Vehicles That Work For Them

By PAUL GESSING
President
Rio Grande Foundation

An unelected board called the Environmental Improvement Board (EIB) is currently accepting public comments to determine whether New Mexicans have the freedom to move around this big, beautiful state (or not). We have created a website to help average New Mexicans defend that right. Go to: KeepYourCarsNM.com.

The Governor is pushing regulations which would force New Mexicans to buy vastly more electric vehicles than they currently do. If adopted 82% of the vehicles sold in our State will have to be electric within a few short years. There is nothing Read More

Bernstein: Transparency Attempt

By CHRISTINE BERNSTEIN
Candidate for re-election
Los Alamos School Board

Disclaimer: The following is an expression of my own personal opinions, thoughts, ideas and feelings.  This is not a representation of the board, members of the board, or district.

I have sat down and written about 4 different pieces on transparency. And each time my writing evolves into a different topic. I start out talking about transparency and the next thing I know I have written about racism, board member duties and responsibilities, anecdotal experiences, and feelings.

I suppose these are all related in some way Read More

Clark: School Bond Benefits Students, Teachers, Community

By CAROL A. CLARK
Publisher
Los Alamos Daily Post

There is an important Bond Election underway for Los Alamos Public Schools (LAPS) that we at the Post believe will benefit K-12 students, teachers and the community for years to come. We encourage residents to support this bond.

Passage of this General Obligation Bond will not increase the local tax rate but what it will do is allow the schools to reach the goal of raising $30 million for much needed building projects. These projects include completing construction at Pinon and Chamisa elementary schools in White Rock, along with repairs, upgrades Read More

Pongratz: Vote ‘Yes’ On School’s General Obligation Bond

By CHERYL and MORRIE PONGRATZ
Los Alamos

Many decades ago, when we lived in White Rock, our children attended the White Rock elementary schools – Chamisa and Pinon. Over the decades the conditions of those buildings have deteriorated to where the roofs leak, climate control is now inadequate, and plumbing issues have arisen. The cost of maintaining those school buildings has increased to the point where it is more cost efficient to build new buildings.

Per New Mexico law, we cannot pass a mill levy for operational expenses such as teacher’s salaries or building maintenance. Salaries Read More

Steinhaus: Proposed School Bond Addresses Critical Needs

By KURT STEINHAUS
Los Alamos

Good schools benefit everyone in Los Alamos, and I wholeheartedly support the upcoming bond election to provide essential funding for our schools. As a retired superintendent dedicated to education in Los Alamos, I understand the importance of modern facilities that foster a conducive learning environment and student and staff well-being. Updated school facilities also help keep everyone safe.

The proposed bond would address critical needs. It’s not just about bricks and mortar; it’s about creating an environment where our children can thrive academically Read More

Dannemann: Don’t Punish The Shooter – Stop Him

The governor’s declaration of a temporary gun moratorium was such a spectacular error that it took public attention off the issues that provoked it: the senseless murders of children in New Mexico.

Now we have lots of yammering about how to fix the gun problem while tiptoeing around the core of the problem: guns.

The suspects in the August 13 killing of five-year-old Galilea Samaniego were reportedly all underage, except for one 19-year-old who said she was not the shooter. We have not heard much about them.

It’s time again for Los Alamos voters to support the future health and vitality of our community through continued improvement of the physical environment in which our children and youth learn and grow.
