Letter to the Editor: ‘Max Baker Municipal Building’ Gets My Vote!

By JJ Maier
Los Alamos

I am hoping the committee will consider the concept of naming the new Municipal Building after (former County Administrator) Max Baker instead of Jeannette Wallace.

Max had so much more to do with our County’s administration if one reviews his record – during some of our roughest times – and he frequently was serving us as an “interim administrator.”

He gave us so much and asked so little in return.

Jeannette served the district of which we were always a part, but had little to do with the administration and running of internal LAC affairs.

I am delighted that UNM-LA is naming

Review: Take a Trip to the 70s with Frost/Nixon

Review by Bonnie J. Gordon

Frost/Nixon is a trip down memory lane for those of us who were there, but maybe it’s more important that those who weren’t there see this play.

If you want to understand the 1970s, certainly a pivotal time in American history, there’s no better way to get a feel for the period than to see Front/Nixon.

The Los Alamos Little Theatre is presenting an excellent production of Peter Morgan’s play this month. The show portrays the 1977 television interviews Read More

Letter to the Editor: Research Reveals More Names For LAHS Memorial Garden Plaques

By Linda Hull, president 2012-13
The Rotary Club of Los Alamos

As many in the community know, the Los Alamos High School Memorial Garden was dedicated Dec. 20 in honor of students who lost their lives while enrolled at the high school.

A temporary visual display of plaques was posted on the flagstone centerpiece located in the middle of the garden, around which leaders of the school district, community and the high school gathered to make brief remarks.

Permanent plaques have been ordered to replace the temporary ones and will be professionally installed when weather permits.

Khalsa Reviews ‘Jack Reacher’

Theatrical Release Poster

By Dr. Seva SSS Khalsa, DOM, L.Ac.
Your intrepid movie reviewer

The movie Jack Reacher delivers what I expected after seeing the trailer on TV: Action. Don’t expect too much more than that, or anything too complicated here, and there are some definite holes in the plot development.

But we see the usual Mission Impossible Tom Cruise, intense and serious. Despite showing his age, Tom can still deliver in the fight scenes.

We have some hand-to-hand Read More

Letter to the Editor: Second Amendment Thoughts

By William C. Mead
Los Alamos

I have been deeply saddened by the recent tragedy in Newtown, Conn., Nobody should have to endure such senseless violence. And Newtown is only one of a string of recent mass murders.

My views of gun ownership have become more definite. As a result, I have created a petition on the White House petitions site, “We the People” (WtP), displayed below. I hope you will carefully consider the issue. The rationale for my view is discussed on CNN at https:////ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-899792

I understand that many Americans do not agree with my viewpoint, perhaps Read More

Letter to the Editor: Oh, What To Do …

By JJ Maier
Los Alamos

This is a mental health crisis brought to the front by an horrific tragedy.

We must undo the damage done by the Reagan and subsequent administrations/congresses when they eliminated the mental health help/care we were providing to people in need.

Because this is such a complex and mea culpa issue, the media and many short-sighted folks will try to make it a gun issue, which is way simpler.

Take away all guns and mentally sick folks will use knives and rocks. Please, let’s get this runaway train on the right track at least. Thank You!

Letter to the Editor: Message to Mother LANL

By Inez Ross
Los Alamos author

It wasn’t only the downturn of the economy, the ease of Internet buying, nor the rise of e-books that caused the demise of our bookstore.

Another straw was the high rents charged in this town for local businesses. We are a one-company town and at the mercy of building owners who can charge what LANL can pay for their own offices.

Rents here should not be as high as in larger towns like Denver and Boulder. The subsidy money did not go to owners of small businesses here.

Mother LANL can keep her children on the Hill by furnishing rent free buildings

Letter to the Editor: A View Toward a Workable N.M. 502 Plan

By William C. Mead
Los Alamos

Background and history: As you may know, N.M. 502 between Central Avenue and Airport Road presents significant obstacles and hazards to traffic flow and pedestrians.

It operates at peak times with considerable congestion, particularly during the evening commute, when traffic is either crawling or stop-and-go.

The morning commute operates below the current speed limit due to congestion. Pedestrian service is inadequate, even though some points of obvious access lie along this segment.

Los Alamos County (LAC) has proven amazingly dysfunctional in arriving Read More

Letter to the Editor: To Catch A Thief

By Nancy Coombs, Marketing Director
Fuller Lodge Art Center

On behalf of the staff at Fuller Lodge Art Center I’d like to extend a heart-felt “thank you” to our volunteer Deborah Stone-Richard and to the Los Alamos Police Department for their efforts in chasing and apprehending a shoplifter on Nov. 28.

Although our staff was suspicious that the woman was pocketing items as she walked around the gallery/gift shop, there was no direct evidence of theft inside the shop.

Deborah’s shift ended just as the woman left the Art Center, and she chose to follow her. As the suspect Read More

Letter to the Editor: Local Businesses Show Generosity

By Diana Martinez
Senior Program Director
The Family YMCA

Local businesses field requests all year for support of worthy causes. My experience is that our local businesses are often more generous than the corporate giants.

I hope our community remembers this and buys gifts and certificates locally not just at Christmas, but all year. The Y’s latest event was a half marathon and 5K race and many businesses came though yet again, but so many more give in other events to other charities.

Thank you to our business community. And special thanks to this event’s sponsors: Alpine Laser Dental, McDonalds, Read More
