Nathan: Please Vote ‘No’ On Amendment 1

By FRED NATHAN JR.
Founder and Executive Director
Think New Mexico

Toward the bottom of your ballot you will find Constitutional Amendment 1.

There are at least three good reasons to vote no:

-The problem it seeks to fix has already been addressed;

-The amendment is being presented in a misleading manner; and

-A mysterious political action committee (PAC) is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to promote the amendment without disclosing the source of that dark money.

Let’s start with that final point. In recent weeks, a PAC called the “Committee to Protect New Mexico Consumers” has sent Read More

APCG: We Count, Now And Beyond The Next Decade

By All Pueblo Council of Governors

The impacts of past census counts are evident in almost every Tribal community across the nation. Bustling clinics, lively Head Start schools, and much needed housing developments show that the Census does have a real impact on Native American tribes.

Federal decision-makers use the data collected by the Census to disperse millions of dollars to the state and to our Tribal communities.

A Census count occurs every decade and it is not an exaggeration to say the 2020 Census may be the most important yet, not only for us but for future generations as we work to address Read More

Reagor: The UnQuarked Mess – You Get The Bill

By DAVID REAGOR
Republican Candidate
Los Alamos County Council

The UnQuarked business is a wine bar and restaurant that has operated in Los Alamos for a number of years. Last year they attempted to move to a new site on Central Avenue. Almost a year ago the county government stopped work on the site by red tagging their remodeling efforts. The owner states that he intends to file suit against the county. He alleges financial harm caused by the county government actions that are “unlawful, arbitrary, and capricious”.

The same space was open as a restaurant in the past, it was the former home of the Blue Read More

Letter To The Editor: Gessing And Unions

By ED BIRNBAUM
Los Alamos

The recent op-ed in the Los Alamos Daily Post (link) by Paul Gessing, president of the New Mexico Rio Grande Foundation, reiterates the usual talking points about unions in their efforts to encourage members of unions to leave their union, whether they are employees in the private or the public sector.

The reasons given range from the cost of belonging to a union to the fact that an employee may not agree with the policies advocated for by their union.

Members can already reduce their union dues by the amount used by the union for political purposes, and I can certainly appreciate Read More

Letter To The Editor: What Am I Going To Do?

DEE CRUZ-MURPHY
Los Alamos

It is abundantly clear that the country is divided. There are two vastly different versions about what is currently rocking the country.

One narrative is of violent riots, looting, pillaging and calling for the burning down of the Institution of the United States. One narrative is of peaceful protests calling for defunding the police, fixing a system that is systemically racist.

Then there is the silent narrative that doesn’t completely follow either rendering. The silent narrative is sitting back and questioning both sides. Yes, violent rioting, looting, pillaging Read More

Letter To The Editor: Response To Skolnik

By MARIO SCHILLACI
Los Alamos

In the interest of “telling it like it is” (link), the following should also be considered:

(1) A recent study by the CDC (“Commercial Laboratory Seroprevalence Survey Data”), based on SARS-CoV-2 antibodies found in non-COVID-19 related clinical blood specimens collected in six U.S. locations (more to be added), found that the estimated number of infected cases based on Seroprevalence and catchment area population was 6 to 24 times the number of cases reported (mean of 12.5). Therefore, focusing on cases would seem to be a futile exercise. Number of deaths would Read More

Letter To The Editor: From A NOT Grumpy Trail User

By BRUCE WARREN
Los Alamos

I appreciate Mike Browne’s sort of support (link) or the comments in my earlier letter (link).

I apologize that my English structure was too sophisticated for him to understand that I was saying I was not a grumpy hiker, but instead both a biker and a hiker. Perhaps he meant it humorously, but his labeling me as “grumpy” falls into a long established dishonorable internet tradition of name-calling to discount or dismiss other’s comments. “

As far as generalizing, I don’t think saying “many bikers” is a generalization. My experience the past few months has been that Read More

Letter To The Editor: Mom, Dad, Where Are You?

By DAREN SAVAGE
Los Alamos

We had numerous gunshots in the Western Area last night (4th of July).

It got so bad that I had to call 911 to report it. The dispatcher reacted like mine was  one of many calls.

The police were patrolling when I took my trash out; armed. Mom, Dad, where are you?

I just want clarify my issue is the lack of parental supervision, not the use of firearms. Read More
