Letter To The Editor: Thank you Los Alamos County Little League For Your Service To Our Kids And Our Families

By APRIL NOLEN
Los Alamos

As I watched my 9-year-old daughter pedal off to school this morning, I wanted to say thank you to the Los Alamos County Little League Board for the bike she won at opening day last year.

She has ridden it to school every day since she won it (except for her orchestra days – we can’t figure out how to get her viola and backpack to school with a bike on those days).

She’s very proud of her bike and loves riding it around White Rock.

We have enjoyed being part of the Los Alamos Little League over the years, and I wanted to send you all a note

Letter To The Editor: Christine Bernstein Is New And Invigorated Voice School Board Needs

By KEANNA COHEN
Former Teaching Assistant

It is with great pleasure and excitement that I endorse Christine Bernstein for the Los Alamos School Board.

While both candidates are dear friends and mentors, I believe that Christine Bernstein offers the enthusiasm and experience necessary to address the complex issues that students in Los Alamos face today.

I am a product of Pinon Elementary, Los Alamos Middle School and Los Alamos High School. My brother attends Pinon Elementary, my mother was raised in Los Alamos, and I am considering returning to Los Alamos one day to raise a family of my own. Needless Read More

World Futures: Data, Information, Knowledge – Part 1

By ANDY ANDREWS
Los Alamos World Futures Institute

Data, information and knowledge are obviously related. A simple statement and one could stop at this point.

Today, however, we are inundated with all three and it is useful to examine them more closely and explore their implications in our everyday lives and decision making about the future. Let us begin with data.
Data is the plural of datum, at least it was in the 20th century. Today the English language has evolved and we use “data” for both the singular and the plural. Originally used in English around 1640, our perception of data

Letter To The Editor: Many Paths To Student Success

By JULIA BAKER
LAPS Board Candidate
District 4 Barranca Elementary & LAMS

Lately I’ve had the opportunity to visit with a lot of people in our community about our schools. I’ve been encouraged and inspired by the stories that I’ve heard and I’ve been grateful for those who have also opened up about their struggles.

One topic that many have brought up is the need for increased support for varying student needs. I usually refer to this concept as “multiple paths to success”. So I’d like to address what that means to me.

Each of us has taken a different path to get where we are today.

By JUDITH MCKENZIE

Rock The Bond, It Will Not Increase Taxes…

But it will increase the value of our future. Education is the foundation of our country and we have the opportunity to make a positive choice in that foundation.

Los Alamos Schools are exceptional and we can make them even better. There are so many great ideas out there among our teachers, community and administration and we can work together to meet the needs of our children.

Our history of using our bond money has proved to be”promises made, promises kept”, and we can look forward to more of the same.

By BILL WADT

I am a member of a citizens committee working to assure the passage of the $20 million general obligation bond Nov. 5, 2019 with early voting commencing Oct. 8.
  • The bond will NOT raise the tax rate.
  • The bond will provide needed funds to remodel and renovate Chamisa and Piñon elementary schools.
  • Over the past 20 years, the Los Alamos Public Schools have established a great track record using your tax dollars well to build better schools.
  • The excellence of the Los Alamos Public Schools is a key factor in why people want to live in Los Alamos.

Finally, US taxpayers provide

Letter To The Editor: Paving Paradise To Put Up A Parking Lot…

By Leigh House and Gloria Gilmore-House
Los Alamos

That phrase, from a 1960s protest song, describes what our County proposes to do very soon.

The County Council’s Aug. 27 meeting included a plan to give 2.5 acres of County land to a private developer, TNJ, to build a Marriott hotel and conference center. The land, valued at nearly $2 Million, is located on the recently paved south end of 20th Street, where the “Smart House” is located.

The development plan from TNJ included paving most of the land for parking. Ironically, there may not be enough parking to accommodate the hotel’s
