Letter To The Editor: End Of Life Options Act Shows True Compassion

By CARL A. NEWTON
Los Alamos

The now dying Vietnamese Buddhist Thich Nhat Hanh admonished us for decades to be mindful and compassionate and I struggle to practice that. While listening to the just presented CON remarks, I’m aware that the compassion that I avow is different from their sense of compassion.

My daughter is the minister of a Massachusetts Federated Church, the First Parish Church of Berlin, and the parishioners are United Church of Christ and Unitarian Universalist worshipping together. Although I’m comfortable with naming her in my health care proxy, I will name and rename a local Read More

Letter To The Editor: What Don’t Democrats Understand About The Word ‘Permanent’?

By VERNON KERR
Los Alamos

What don’t Democrats understand about the word “Permanent”?

There is this $23 billion pot of money in New Mexico’s assets called the Land Grant Permanent Fund that was established in 1912 as a condition of statehood.

The fund is perpetuated from parcels that were set aside out of each section of land in the state with these parcels to earn revenue (leases and royalties) for the continuing maintenance of state government. This was to fund state government in perpetuity. The Permanent Fund is responsible for approximately 15 percent of the state operating

Letter To The Editor: Don’t Be Risk Adverse

By DON LEPSCH
Los Alamos

When you go out of your house you take a risk. If you stay in your house you take a risk. Life is a risk. Let us not be risk averse. The individual should decide. We are citizens and adults. Encourage risk … it is how we advance.

When I helped one son (15 years old) with his science project in 1986, he had to ride on top of my 1973 dodge van at 10, 15, 20 and 25 MPH to calibrate his anemometer (an elongated version of a piper cubs) … risky but worth it. He learned something and was proud.

When I helped my other son (16 years old) in 1986 …

Letter To The Editor: Measles … Highly Infectious; Potentially Very Dangerous

By RICHARD SKOLNIK
White Rock

I thank the Post for running an article reminding people to get vaccinated against influenza (link).

It is also important to remind people to vaccinate their young on schedule against measles, especially since many people do not know how infectious and dangerous measles is.

In fact, measles is among the most infectious of all diseases. About 90 percent of unvaccinated people who are exposed to the virus will become infected. By contrast, the recommended two doses of measles vaccine are 97 percent effective in preventing infection.

Letter To The Editor: What Is The Legislature Thinking

By GREG WHITE
Los Alamos

Our Legislature is failing to look at the whole picture on a number of bills that will not only hurt but actually kill New Mexicans.

SB 226 seeks to put us on Daylight Savings Time year round. In 1973, Public Law 93-182 enacted year round DST for the whole U.S. beginning Jan. 6, 1974. In October of 1974, it was repealed re-establishing Standard time for the entire U.S. on Oct. 27, 1974. The reason: a significant measurable spike in serious and fatal car accidents involving children going to school in the dark during the months of January and February 1974. The DOE

Letter To The Editor: Consider Renovating Old Smith’s Into Much Needed Community Performing Arts Center

By MARION PACK
Los Alamos

It has been over two years now since Smiths opened their big Marketplace store. The big space in the MeriMac Shopping Center is still vacant.

I was delighted to see that one of the County Council’s priorities and concerns is to work on the many empty buildings in downtown Los Alamos.

I would like to make a suggestion to them for their consideration.

There is a GREAT NEED for a performing arts center in our town, which is readily available to the community groups. We have been very blessed by the generosity of the churches in town, but one by one they have withdrawn their availability Read More
