Public Comment Period On Chromium Project Draft Environmental Assessment Extended To Nov. 13, 2015

The Department of Energy Environmental Management Los Alamos Field Office (EM-LA) has prepared a Draft Environmental Assessment for the Chromium Plume Control Interim Measure and Plume-Center Characterization at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

This document describes the potential environmental impacts associated with the proposed actions in Mortandad Canyon. The objectives of the proposed actions are to control migration of the chromium plume and to further characterize and study the chromium plume in the groundwater beneath Mortandad Canyon.

PED Revises PARCC Results

We received a text from the Public Education Department that their original information about the definition of “proficient” was incorrect.

Following is the revised criteria: students are considered “proficient” if they score at a level of 4 or 5. (The initial information from PED stated that levels 3, 4, and 5 were “proficient”)

The test scores did not change.

For high school graduation, a score of level 3, 4, or 5 will be accepted for the classes of 2016 and 2017. In future years, a score of level 4 or 5 will be required for graduation. Read More

NMED Joins Arkansas, Oklahoma, Arizona, and North Dakota to Challenge EPA’s Ozone Rule Change

SANTA FE – The New Mexico Environment Department with the States of Arizona, Arkansas, North Dakota, and Oklahoma are challenging the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s decision to set more stringent, one-size-fits-all federal air quality standards for ozone (Arizona v. EPA, D.C. Cir., No. 15-1392, 10/27/15).

Feds Deny NM Drivers Licenses Extension

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security informed New Mexico this week that the state will not be granted an additional extension of time to comply with federal driver’s license standards under the Real ID Act passed by Congress in 2005.

A letter on behalf of DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson to Demisia Padilla, Secretary of the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department finds that “New Mexico has not provided adequate justification for continued noncompliance with the REAL ID standards that would warrant granting your request for another extension.” Read More
