WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Tom Udall welcomed news that Estevan R. López has been nominated to serve as Commissioner of the Bureau of Reclamation. López, a native New Mexican and a graduate of New Mexico Tech, is being nominated replace outgoing Commissioner and Las Cruces native Michael Connor. Connor was recently confirmed as Deputy Secretary of the Department of the Interior.

The Los Alamos School Board is divided 3-2 to retain Superintendent Dr. Gene Schmidt. Board Vice President Judy Bjarke-McKenzie, Secretary Matthew Williams and member Kevin Honnell do not favor extending Schmidt’s contract for another year.

The School Board convened its fourth and final closed door session Thursday, Feb. 27 in the Chamisa Elementary conference room to discuss the evaluation of Schmidt. Monday, Schmidt announced his intent to resign effective June 30.

Roswell—Gov. Susana Martinez has signed into law legislation that will eliminate the sales tax on the purchase of aircraft over 10,000 pounds, a move that can spur growth in New Mexico’s aviation industry and create up to 125 good-paying jobs in Roswell alone.

Local GOP Participates in State Pre-primary Convention

The 12-member Republican Party of Los Alamos delegation, elected Jan. 30 at the Los Alamos County Republican Pre-primary, attended the State Republican Pre-primary Convention Saturday. 
 
Delegates from all 33 counties in New Mexico were represented at the Convention.

Governor Signing Legislation Today Banning Texting While Driving

STATE News:

Santa Fe—Gov. Susana Martinez will sign legislation prohibiting texting while driving in New Mexico. Senate Bill 19, sponsored by Sen. Peter Wirth, D-Santa Fe and Rep. James Smith, R-Sandia Park, bans texting while operating a motor vehicle, except when summoning medical or other emergency help.

 

The Governor is scheduled to sign the bill at 2 p.m., today at the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator in Albuquerque. Read More
