DEA’S Fifth National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day Nets Another Big Haul

DEA News:

WASHINGTON, D.C.– For the fifth time in two years, Americans emptied medicine cabinets, bedside tables, and kitchen drawers of unwanted, unused, and expired prescription drugs and took them to collection sites located throughout the United States as part of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.

Last Saturday, Sept. 29, DEA’s state, local, and tribal law enforcement partners, working at more than 5,263 locations, collected 488,395 pounds (244 tons) of prescription medications from members of the public.

Juveniles Ignite Fire Behind Manhattan Loop

LAPD News:

Two 12-year-old Los Alamos boys started a fire in the canyon behind Manhattan Loop at about 4:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Los Alamos Firefighters doused the blaze and identified the two boys. Los Alamos Police met with the boys and referred them to the juvenile probation officer.

The boys apparently set some leaves on fire, which quickly spread to the surrounding ground cover, according to the police report.

Los Alamos Deputy Fire Chief Justin Grider said the fire scorched a 30 foot by foot area of land and that no structures were affected. Read More

Breaking News: Car Fire Near White Rock Y Blocks Traffic Earlier [Photos / Video]

At approximately 2:50 p.m. today,  Los Alamos Fire Department personnel responded to a vehicle fire near the White Rock Y close to the westbound-to-White Rock underpass. Video from the scene exclusive to the Los alamos Daily Post may be viewed below.

The dramatic rescue of the sole occupant, a 62-year-old man in the car, occurred prior to the car engine compartment bursting into flames, according to radio reports from the scene.

Police Nab Fleeing Motorcyclist Near LANL

Los Alamos police officers arrested Tyler Webb of Los Alamos Monday after he was seen heading southbound on Diamond Drive operating his yellow motorcycle at a high rate of speed.


Webb, 36, refused to pull over when Cpl. Monica Salazar-Casias pulled up behind him and flashed her patrol unit emergency lights, according to the statement of probable cause related to the case.

Espanola Ranger District to Start Santa Fe Watershed Prescribed Burn

ESPANOLA RANGER DISTRICT News

The Espanola Ranger District anticipates initiating a prescribed burn Tuesday, Oct. 2 approximately three miles east of Santa Fe. Total acreage to be treated over two days is 207 acres and will occur as conditions permit. Smoke will likely be seen from Santa Fe, Pecos, Jemez, Tesuque, Los Alamos, Bernalillo, Albuquerque, and Espanola.  The treatments are being implemented to help protect the municipal water supply by reducing hazardous fuels, as well as help sustain watershed, forest and wildlife health.

NMDOT Mill & Overlay on NM502 Starts Tuesday

Starting Tuesday, Oct. 2, NM502 (Main Hill Road) to Los Alamos will be closed weekdays and Saturdays between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. while the NMDOT conducts a milling and overlay pavement rehabilitation project. Work will occur from east of East Gate Drive to the Bayo Canyon access road. Access to the East Gate Industrial Park will be maintained from the townsite.

On Monday, Oct. 8, the roadway will be closed between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Weather permitting, the project should be complete by Oct. 14. Motorists should use NM4/East Jemez Road truck route. Read More
