Bandelier Has Re-Opened

Bandelier National Monument re-opened at noon Thursday after having been closed by the 16-Day government shutdown. The reopening comes just in time to celebrate Sunday’s National Archeology Day and National Wilderness Day.

Y offers ‘Try-Us-Free’ Week

The Family YMCA is offering a special, “Try-Us Free,” week to anyone who lives or works in Los Alamos from Oct.19-26. The Y is also waiving the joining fee to their wellness facility from Oct. 15 throughout the rest of the month.   

 The Y’s CEO Linda Daly announced the free week as an outreach.

“The Y wants to support individuals in stressful times, to help them find a balance,” Daly said. “As an organization, we must also work to balance our resources in support of community, and this free week is one way we can help.”

The Annual Yum Run/Walk 5k, 10K, and 1K is starting at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26 in front of Ruby K’s Bagel Shop downtown Los Alamos off Central Avenue right across from the Post Office.
 
The 5K will be 2 loops around the downtown area and the 1K will head down Central Avenue Westbound and return. The 10K is mainly a trail run that will be a short loop downtown and then head down the trail behind the Aquatic Center and return to Central Avenue.

Rattler Spotted on Rendija Canyon Trail

Los Alamos resident Kei Davis was out for an afternoon hike Monday walking from the paved parking lot in Rendija Canyon before the Sportsmen’s Club (Orienteers parking lot) and on the way back heard, then spotted this rattlesnake just off the trail. ‘It’s not clear from the photo but just over half its length is off the ground, ready to strike,’ Davis told the Los Alamos Daily Post. ‘It was just being defensive, not offensive. The 42nd Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta kick off Saturday with more than 500 hot air balloons representing 20 countries. The fiesta runs through Oct. 13 at Balloon Fiesta Park. Sunset Hay Rides UN-CANCELLED … The Popular Event Is Back On!

The Los Alamos County Parks, Recreation and Open Space Division’s Sunset Hayrides are back on!

The event is moved from Friday to Saturday, Oct. 19 and is supported by the Los Alamos County Sherriff’s Posse Lodge, the Los Alamos Stable Owner’s Association, the Los Alamos Pony Club and the Los Alamos 4-H Club.

Advanced tickets can be purchased at the Larry Walkup Aquatic Center for the 4 p.m. or 5 p.m. rides.

Fees: $5 / adult, 18 & over
$2 / youth, 4 – 17
$1 / child, under 4
Limit: 100 participants per hour

Georgia Pedicini was only 9 seconds off her predicted time in the Cooper Pace Race held on the Canyon Rim Trail in the Atomic City Roadrunner’s final race of the season. 
 
Other accurate predictors were:
  • Lauraine Maness with a 12 second differential;
