Impromptu Gathering Called for Corvette Owners

There will be an impromptu gathering of all Los Alamos Corvette owners at 196 El Rayo on Barranca Mesa at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15.

Green chile cheeseburgers, Nathan’s quarter pound hot dogs, and all the fixing will be on the menu.

“It’s a great opportunity to meet and lie about our cars,” organizer Mike Luna said.

Travel to Area Known for Cretaceous Age Shark Teeth

It’s hard to imagine New Mexico was once under the sea, but during the Cretaceous Period, between 145.5 and 65.5 million years ago, much of the state was.

Because of this, remains of sharks’ teeth can be found at a site aptly named Shark’s Tooth Ridge near Cabezon, N.M.

The White Rock Visitor Center (WRVC) will begin selling Bandelier weekly passes, Bandelier Annual Passes and the “America the Beautiful” interagency passes Friday, Sept. 6.

Passes will initially be sold on a cash only basis. Credit card sales will be accepted beginning Sept. 16.

PEEC Offers Rare Chance to Explore Buckman Cave

For those who seek an adventure this fall, look no further than the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) caving trip to explore Buckman Cave in Diablo Canyon.

Buckman Cave is an elusive spelunking spot outside of Santa Fe. Few locals know about it. Local outdoorsman and adventure guide Tony Hinojosa will lead the PEEC day trip Sunday, Sept 22.

Registration for the next session of dog training classes offered by the Los Alamos Dog Obedience Club (LADOC) will begin Sept. 9.

Georgia Pedicini Wins Sept. 3 Pace Race

Georgia Pedicini was 11 seconds off for 2 miles at Tuesday’s pace race, and Laura McClellan’s 23:28 for 3 miles was 13 seconds off her prediction.

There were 18 people who competed in the weekly Tuesday pace race in Pajarito Acres ranging in age from 3 to 78. The course is a fairly-flat 1-mile paved-loop mainly on Estante Way. Rain ended an hour before the race started.

One could run any number of loops but with a requested time of 45 minutes or less. All distances from 1 to 6 miles were done. Most did 1 or 3 miles.

With all the rain in the area lately, crops of mushrooms have popped up all around.

Join PEEC and members of the New Mexico Mycological Society (NMMS) for a free mushroom walk at Pajarito Ski Hill at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 8. Participants should meet at PEEC at 9:30 a.m. to carpool to the Pajarito Ski Area. Four experts from the Mycological Society will be on hand to identify and interpret the different mushrooms growing after the wet summer.
