It’s a cold winter night in Los Alamos, but at the Family YMCA, our very own roller derby team is generating plenty of heat as they spin around the gym at top speed.

The Los Alamos Derby Dames is a flat track roller derby league founded in April 2011. The league currently has one team, the M’Atom Bombs.

With some help from the 2009 movie “Whip It” roller derby, which is dominated by all-female amateur teams, has grown in popularity in recent years.

Dr. Paul Bauer of the New Mexico Bureau of Geology & Mineral Resources is the featured speaker for the Los Alamos Geological Society’s 2013 Banquet.

The community is invited to attend the event, which begins at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26 at the Christian Church, 92 East Road, and at 7 p.m., Bauer will present his talk.

‘Meetup’ With Others to Experience Interesting Events

Bandelier Staff Leave Early Due to Snow

Bandelier National Monument authorized an early-release for all non-essential staff at 2 p.m. today, Jan. 14.
 
The Monument has been experiencing light to moderate snowfall all day, with some accumulation on the roads.
 
At 1:30 p.m., the conditions on N.M. 4 were still acceptable for safe driving, but snowfall is continuing to intensify.
 
Although the Visitor Center will close early, the Monument will remain open with no fees being collected to allow visitors to continue to access and enjoy the park in the snow.

Turf Covers Meant to Protect Against Winter’s Wrath

If you drive by the golf course on a regular basis you may have noticed that a number of the golf course’s greens were covered prior to the first snows of the season. 

These turf covers are meant to protect the golf greens from the wrath that winter conditions can sometimes bring. The covers provide protection from both Crown Hydration and Desiccation.
