LANL News:

Artificial intelligence loves electricity. By one estimate, the cost to power the world’s large language models (LLMs) will surpass the gross domestic product of the United States by 2027. That’s an estimated annual electricity bill of 25 trillion dollars, and while that’s probably an overestimate, the point is: current AI is an energy hog. To counter Read More

Op-Ed: Defunding Science, Is At Our Peril

By MARTIN LAWLER

Modern medicine saved my life, what about yours? From polio to COVID vaccines to surgery at a famous medical center to our local New Mexico hospital, I owe my life to medical researchers and doctors.

Europe used to be the genesis of modern medicine: Louis Pasteur invented pasteurization and vaccines, Marie Curie discovered x-rays. Then American scientist took over. Under the leadership of President Roosevelt, the National Institute of Health (NIH) and National Science Foundation were created. Our government has funded important cancer, heart, and HIV research. Amateur Naturalist: From Small To Large

Lizards are remarkable in many ways. On one hand all the species are similar, based on the length of their tails. Half to three-fourths of their total length is in their tail. Their tail appears more as a continuation of their central body section. It is not that distinct except when emerging after their back legs. Their head and body sections also are more of a single unit.

They do not have a distinct neck between their head and body. Their front legs are what clearly shows where the separation occurs. A lizard would look more like a snake if it did not have legs.

AGU: New Carrier Birds Brought Avian Flu To Europe And The Americas

AGU News:

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Bird flu cases are rising rapidly in the United States and around the world. A new study traces how the disease spread over the last two decades from Asia to Europe, Africa and the Americas. New bird species, from pelicans to peregrine falcons, are catching and carrying the disease, the study finds. The pattern may be a clue to why culling domestic birds has not halted the most recent outbreak.

The study shows the important role a wider range of wild birds have as both victims and vectors of disease spread, upending previous assumptions about which birds spread the virus. Read More
