FBI: Zuni Man Charged With Abuse

ALBUQUERQUE — A Zuni man was indicted on federal sexual abuse charges related to an alleged assault.

According to court records, on June 11, 2024, Karl Devain Escobar, 33, an enrolled member of the Zuni Pueblo, engaged in a sex act with Jane Doe using force and without her consent.

Escobar is charged with sexual abuse and aggravated sexual abuse. He will remain in third party custody pending trial, which has not been scheduled. If convicted, Escobar faces up to life in prison.

The State Game and Fish Department has ended its Winter Trout Stocking Program. Locations in Southern New Mexico, including the Albuquerque area drainage ditches and Tingley Beach will no longer be stocked with rainbow trout. 

The Department stocked a total of 34,530 rainbow trout weighing 16,179 pounds. Most of the stocking will now be in Northern New Mexico.

Governor Appoints Bernitz To Eleventh Judicial District

SANTA FE — Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has announced the appointment of John William Bernitz as the Eleventh Judicial District Attorney, Division II, serving McKinley County.

Bernitz’s appointment is effective immediately and will last until the next general election as provided by law. He currently serves as Chief Deputy District Attorney in the Office of the District Attorney, Eleventh Judicial District, a position he has held since October 2025.

He previously operated the Law Office of John Bernitz in Gallup from 2021 to 2023, handling criminal and family law matters.

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Department of Wildlife (NMWD) will review its State List of Threatened and Endangered Wildlife Species, pursuant to the New Mexico Wildlife Conservation Act (Section 17-2-40 NMSA 1978), with public comments on the previous Biennial Review document issued in 2024 accepted from April 6 to July 6.
