Los Alamos clay artists Darla Graff Thompson and Gloria Gilmore-House will represent Los Alamos in the Celebration of Clay: Many Hands, Many Ways at the Gallery at Santa Fe Clay.

The show will host its opening reception 5-7 p.m. April 26 at the Gallery at Santa Fe Clay, located in the Rail Yard District at 45 Camino de la Familia. The show continues through May 31.

WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. House Assistant Speaker Ben Ray Luján (D-NM) announced Tuesday details for the 2019 Congressional Art Competition.
 
Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in young people.
 
The winning entry from New Mexico’s 3rd Congressional District will be displayed as part of an exhibit in the United States Capitol for one year. In honor of Earth Day, the theme of this year’s Art Competition is Mother Earth.

Tyler Mills’ poetry book “Hawk Parable” was published in March 2019 by the University of Akron Press after winning the prestigious 2017 Akron Poetry Prize.

Hakim Bellamy is the featured speaker at noon, April 26 at the New Mexico Book Co-op in the Golden Corral on San Mateo.

 

The primary discussion is on the Creative Bravos Awards now handled by the City of Albuquerque. Bellamy also will have a conversation with the attendees on the needs of the book community.

 

Bellamy is the former Poet Laureate of Albuquerque and now works for the City of Albuquerque Cultural Affairs Department.

 

The meeting is open to the public but each attendee must buy their own lunch buffet. Attendees come early starting at 11 a.m. to network.

Daily Postcard: The young black bear that first began frequenting the developed area in Frijoles Canyon at Bandelier National Monument a few years ago is now grown and a mom with two cubs of her own. The park hopes she will teach her offspring the necessary wariness of humans that she learned only through several years of adverson techniques applied by diligent park rangers. The public is reminded that the survival of any wildlife, especially large wildlife like bears, in any park is largely dependent upon human visitors and park staff.
