Ninety-seven Golfers Raise Funds For BBBS

COMMUNITY News:

The Los Alamos Golf Couse hosted the third annual Big Brothers Big Sisters Golf Tournament in which 97 golfers participated.

Art Brown, Dawn Brown, Kelly Myers, Kenna Chavarria and the rest of the volunteers helped make this a successful tournament.

The team of Ian Maes, Mike Maes, Kay Linda Crawford and Chris Ortega shot a 20 under par 52 to win first place gross. The low net team consisting of Randy and Tanner Vaughn, Don Branch and James Merhege shot a 19 under 53 to take the prize.

Cutting Edge Breast Cancer Screening Comes to Santa Fe

According to the American College of Radiology (ACR), more than 40 percent of all U.S. women have dense breast tissue, and women in the highest dense-breast category established by the ACR are four to six times more likely to get breast cancer compared to women with low breast density.

Entry to WIPP Underground Facility Resumed

WIPP News:

Entries into the WIPP underground facility have resumed after being suspended for several weeks while workers changed air filters on the WIPP Ventilation System.

The Accident Investigation Board (AIB) has completed their examination in most of the underground facility. However, Room 7 Panel 7 will be inaccessible to recovery workers until the AIB investigation is completed.

State of the Art Hotel Coming to Old Town Albuquerque

Plans have been finalized for a new multi-million dollar hotel in Old Town, Albuquerque, according to Heritage Hotels and Resorts, Inc.

School Board Holds Closed Session To Discuss Superintendent Candidates Aug. 5

This Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 2 and 3, the Los Alamos City Championship will take place. Entries are still open.

The course will close Saturday morning until 11 a.m. and this time may change based on the number of competitors, so please call the golf shop later in the week for details. The course will be closed in the morning until 11 a.m. and close again 12:30-1:30 p.m. Sunday to finish out the championship.

Flamingos Flock Mini Library On 45th Street

A tiny library in front of a home at 2639 45th St. was the latest recipient of a traveling troupe of pink flamingos.

Richard Bolton and Kathy Gursky are participating in a national organization called little Free Library and erected a small library at the corner of 45th and Arizona. In it are books that neighbors can sit and enjoy at the stone bench in their yard or take home and return.

Gursky, a retired librarian, said their tiny library is part of a national organization (littlefreelibrary.org) and is one of three in Los Alamos.
