Commissioned Study Finds New Mexico’s Wild Gila And San Francisco Rivers Contribute Substantially To Local Economy

SANTA FE — Water related outdoor recreation in New Mexico’s Gila River and San Francisco River watersheds stimulates economic activity that supports at least 3,900 jobs in New Mexico, providing $92.4 million of income, according to a new study conducted by Southwick and Associates and commissioned by The Pew Charitable Trusts.

These water related activities contribute at least $427.8 million to the state’s economy annually. In addition, this spending is associated with $143.9 million of value-added to New Mexico’s economy.

Food Depot Closes Due To Staff Positive COVID-19 Test

THE FOOD DEPOT News:

SANTA FE — The Food Depot closed Friday, Nov. 13, due to a staff member testing positive for COVID-19. 

The Food Depot learned Friday that a staff member had a confirmed case of COVID-19 and closed immediately.

It is unknown when or how this individual contracted the virus. The staff member is receiving appropriate medical attention and quarantining at home.

The food bank’s proactive transmission prevention strategies have protected hunger relief efforts up to this point, and will continue to minimize exposure in the future.

SANTA FE — Students in Elsie Espinoza’s fifth-grade class in Deming can now open a video to review any lesson or instruction she’s given in case they missed it the first time or just need to hear something again. 

Espinoza delivers lessons virtually because her school is in the remote learning mode. But now she can videotape those lessons as she gives them and store them on the Canvas learning management system for playback whenever needed.

The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) has updated its daily Rapid Response COVID-19 Watchlist, which includes New Mexico places of employment that have had two or more rapid responses in the last 14 days.

There are now 157 establishments on the Watchlist.

In light of COVID-19, the Los Alamos Arts Council worked with the Los Alamos County Community Services Department to display pumpkins on Central Avenue this year instead of holding the annual “Pumpkin Glow” event.

The pumpkins were part of the seasonal scarecrow contest entries on display Friday, Oct. 30 through Sunday, Nov. 1. The carved pumpkins represent approximately 10 families.
