The New Mexico Search and Rescue Council Announces Annual Search and Rescue Conference.

The New Mexico Search and Rescue Council (NMSARC) will be hosting ESCAPE (Emergency Services Annual Preparedness Event), its annual training event for search and rescue volunteers on May 4-6 at the Buffalo Thunder Resort, Spa, and Casino in Pojoaque, NM.  Over 200 volunteers from throughout New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, and Texas, will be attending to train in all aspects of effective search and rescue.  The three-day conference also has a trade show, featuring the latest in search and rescue Read More

David Mutschlecner Reads From and Signs Enigma and Light

David Mutschlecner will read from and sign his new book of poetry, Enigma and Light, at Ruby K’s Bagel Café on Thursday, May 3, at 6. Tickets to the event are $22.50, which includes the book and refreshments, and will be available at the door the night of the event. Otowi Station Bookstore and Ruby K’s are sponsoring the event.

Summer Video Editing Classes at PAC 8

This summer, PAC 8 is offering 20 sessions of video education classes. Classes will be for students in grades 2- 6 and additional classes will be held for middle school students. The classes are lots of fun – students make music videos, news shows, documentaries, commercials and comedies. This year we’re also offering animation classes.

There are four levels to choose from:

Beginning Classes – basic camera techniques, audio, editing with I Movie, interviewing, studio production.

Intermediate Classes – digital cameras, editing with Final Cut Pro, blue screen, special effects.

Mesa Public Library to Host Display of Historic J. Robert Oppenheimer Photographs

The J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Committee (JROMC) will present an exhibit of historic photos entitled “J. Robert Oppenheimer: Photographs From His Life: 1904 – 1967” at the Mesa Public Library Gallery, 2400 Central Ave. from May 2 to May 30. The public is encouraged to visit the exhibit.

An opening reception will be 4:30-6:30 p.m. May 3, at the Mesa Public Library Gallery upstairs. Refreshments will be served and members of the JROMC will be on hand to answer questions.

On Thursday, the library will screen writer/director Kar Wei Wong’s “Chungking Express,” a nineties movie that feels like a nineties movie. Having “come of age” in the nineties, I mean that as a compliment. I like flannel shirts mixed with impressionistic psychotic love. A team of students from Los Alamos High School is competing this week in the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl (NSB) in Washington, D.C. and has advanced to the “sweet sixteen” from an original field of 69 high school teams from across the country.
