COUNTY News:

Happy New Year and welcome back to this week’s edition of “The County Line” newsletter.

Things around the County have been fairly quiet over the last two weeks, but next week is likely to be a lot busier so please observe posted speed zone signs near school areas when schools resume classes on Tuesday.

Celebrate New Years Eve in the Valle Grande

VALLE CALDERA News:

Visitors can get an early start on 2013 at the Fourth Annual New Years Eve Fireworks Celebration in the Valle Grande.

The festivities commence at 5 p.m. and include skiing, snowshoeing, bonfires and end beginning at 8 p.m. with a fireworks display.

Ticket reservations are required for all the events and include reserved parking, a skiing/snowshoeing permit, food and a raffle ticket for a door prize.

Parking space is limited for this unique celebration, so please car pool. No pets are allowed on the Preserve, only working assistance animals are allowed.

LANB Treats Local Seniors to Holiday Feast

Los Alamos National Bank treated local seniors to its annual ‘Holiday Lunch’ Friday at the Betty Ehart Senior Center. LANB employees served the meals during two seatings. Senior Center staff prepared the lunch, which featured tender roast beef  and all the trimmings. LANB’s Karen Easton presented gifts and prizes to the seniors gathered for the event. NNSA Administrator D’Agostino Retiring in January

National Nuclear Security Administration Administrator Thomas P. D’Agostino announced today that he will retire Jan. 18, 2013.

NNSA Principal Deputy Administrator Neili Miller will serve as Acting Under Secretary for Nuclear Security and Acting Adminstrator of the NNSA.

Co-op Surpasses $3 Million in Sales

COOPERATIVE MARKET News:

The Los Alamos Co-op Market has announced that on Dec. 16, it reached another major milestone with year-to-date sales exceeding $3 million.

The Co-op opened March 2, 2011 and has grown to 1,703 members with approximately 75 percent of the sales being from its member-owners.

The Co-op is open to all whether they are a member or not.

Frank A. Ortega 1948 – Dec. 11, 2012

Frank A. Ortega, 64, a resident of Los Alamos passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012. 

Mr. Ortega was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, sportsman and avid weight lifter.

He was a lifetime member of the NRA. He retired from Los Alamos National Laboratory in April of 2012. Upon retirement, he spent his time with his grandchildren; the loves of his life.

Ryan Steward, 25, passed away unexpectedly on Dec. 15, 2012. He was born in Bakersfield, California on Dec. 11, 1987. He is survived by his mother and father, Carole and Tom Steward, and his brothers Andrew and Daniel. He lived in California until 1996 when he moved to Los Alamos, New Mexico with his family.

Every April in New Mexico, I observe hundreds of people walking many miles on Good Friday before Easter to El Santuario de Chimayo Shrine.

As I scan the crowd it is clear that for the majority of the crowd this trek is the farthest they will walk all year.

Impressed and confused by this annual spectacle I wondered why these people would undertake such a physical task one day each year.

As a wellness coach, I wanted to know their secret. If I could figure out what inspired them to move, maybe I could use the same power to propel my clients off the couch.

‘Dixie Diner Sundays’ Start Dec. 9

Denise Lane, owner of both the Dixie Girl and Hill Diner has announced a change in Sunday offerings at the two restaurants.

Beginning Sunday Dec. 9, Hill Diner will not be open Sundays, but the Dixie Girl will be open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. for Sunday brunch and lunch.
