The Family YMCA is offering free Diabetes Prevention Classes. The class is on Tuesdays from April 3rd through May 8th from 11:00 to 11:45 am. Pre-registration at the Family YMCA is required at least 48 hours prior to the session. Classes will be held at the Y’s Administrative offices located behind the Urgent Care Center on 15th and Trinity


The following topics will be covered:



  • What is Type 2 diabetes?

  • Signs and symptoms of type 2 diabetes.

  • What does having pre-diabetes mean?

  • What are the risk factors?

  • How you can reduce your risk of getting type 2 diabetes.

Local Woman Honored as Hospice Director of the Year

LAVNS News:

Executive Director Sarah Rochester of Los Alamos Visiting Nurse Service has been selected as Hospice Director of the Year by the Texas New Mexico Hospice Organization.

Rochester obtained Hospice certification for Los Alamos Visiting Nurse Service December 1994. 

LAVNS is the only not-for-profit, free standing Hospice service in Northern New Mexico.

LAVNS will break ground on the only Hospice House in Northern New Mexico in the near future.

Los Alamos Public Schools Citizens Review Committee Formed

LOS ALAMOS PUBLIC SCHOOLS News

A Citizens Review Committee was formed to review the status of the school referendum and bond projects.  This committee met for the first time on March 21, 2012. As part of their work, the committee will verify whether the school district accomplished what it set out to accomplish in its plans that were presented to the public.

DPU’s Abiquiu Hydroelectric Facility Earns Engineering Excellence Award

DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC UTILITIES News

The Los Alamos County Department of Public Utilities Abiquiu Hydroelectric Facility received another award for the low flow turbine project.

The American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) New Mexico awarded the Engineering Excellence Award in the “Energy” category to AECOM for its engineering design work on the low flow project.

An award banquet is set to take place at the Sandia Hotel and Casino April 6.

Sheriff Locates Unregistered Sex Offender

A citizen informed authorities that a convicted sex offender was working on the N.M. 4 state road crew in White Rock, but had not registered with the local Sheriff’s Office.

“A call came in through the Crime Stoppers Tip Line on March 14 of a possible sex offender working in White Rock and we passed the information along to the Sheriff’s Office,” said Capt. Randy Foster of the Los Alamos Police Department.
