County Leaders Advocate For Federal Disaster Reform

WASHINGTON — The National Association of Counties (NACo) and nearly 20 county leaders from 13 states are coming together for a leadership fly-in meeting April 28-29 in Washington, D.C. focused on disaster reform. The participants are members of NACo’s Intergovernmental Disaster Reform Task Force, a group of elected and appointed county leaders focused on strengthening our nation’s disaster mitigation, response and recovery capabilities.

High school students interested in spending time with the FBI in Albuquerque or Las Cruces are encouraged to apply for the agency’s 2026 Teen Academy.

  • The Las Cruces Teen Academy will take place on June 10–12, 2026.
  • The Albuquerque Teen Academy will take place from July 6–10, 2026.

Margie Burt Weatherford Lane was born on April 27, 1926, outside of Devils Lake, N.D., during a time when radios were the heart of the home. She grew up helping on the family farm with her five younger siblings. At age 15, the family moved to Tigard, Ore., where she graduated high school.

Shortly after, she met her future husband, Leslie Weatherford and moved to his hometown of Vidor, Texas. There they raised their three children, Marylou, Burt and Laurie.
