EM-LA Updates Los Alamos County Council On Efforts To Resolve Chromium Plume

For more than 20 years, the Department of Energy (DOE) has been attempting to successfully eradicate the hexavalent chromium plume in the aquifer 1,000 feet below Mortandad and Sandia canyons.

Los Alamos County Council learned about DOE’s Environmental Management-Los Alamos Field Office’s (EM-LA) progress on resolving this long-term issue during its Tuesday night meeting.

Bernadette Martinez Takes Helm At County HR Department

As the new Los Alamos County Human Resources Manager, Bernadette Martinez has made helping people her entire career.

She explained she has worked for Los Alamos County, in the Human Resources Division, for 15 years. She started as a Human Resources Technician as rose through the ranks before officially becoming the manager Dec. 8. Martinez took over the position from Mary Tapia.

County Issues Camp May Road Holiday Closure Update

COUNTY News:

Camp May Road will have an altered road closure schedule during the next two weeks to accommodate the holidays. The road will be closed for construction activities on Monday, Dec 22 and Tuesday, Dec. 23, and again the following week on Monday, Dec.  29 and Tuesday, Dec. 30.

Camp May Road will be open from Wednesdays through Sundays both weeks for public access.

As a reminder, Camp May Road is closed until Friday, Dec. 19, of this week for construction. The public may have access after 5 p.m. on Friday until midday Sunday, Dec. 21.

In Los Alamos County, occasionally we see wildlife acting in a way that raises alarm. What does it mean when we say there is an animal not behaving normally, and what can we do to remain safe?

A large predator is not behaving normally when it fails to show its natural avoidance of humans or exhibits bold, aggressive behavior. Normally, most large predators are wary of humans and will actively avoid contact, as they do not want to risk injury in a conflict. County To Turn Off Various Neighborhood Streetlights For Farolito Viewing Dec. 19–29

COUNTY News:

The Los Alamos County Traffic & Streets Division will be turning off the power to various streetlights to enhance the viewing of holiday farolitos. The streetlights will be turned off Friday, Dec. 19 and will be restored on Monday, Dec. 29.

County Reports REDINet Wi-Fi Networks Are Restored

COUNTY News:

Los Alamos County Information Management reports that the network provider, REDINet, restored services at 11:38 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10.

REDINet began experiencing downtime on Wednesday morning, following a hardware failure. The two County networks affected included “LAC Public” at all County facilities, and “Discover LA”, the free Wi-Fi available in the Los Alamos downtown historic district.

The downtime was caused when REDInet experienced a hardware failure involving a critical component.

DPU Customer Care Limited Operations Friday

The Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities (DPU) Customer Care Center will be operating in a limited capacity from 12:30–2:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 12, for an employee appreciation luncheon.

Road Closure Scheduled For North Road Today!

The south lane of North Road will be closed between Quemazon Place and Diamond Drive from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., today, Dec. 10, to repair a sewer main. The north lane of North Road will remain open for access to the Quemazon Neighborhood.

Drivers will need to detour to the north to exit the Quemazon Neighborhood.
