- Although Christmas tree fires are not common, when they do occur, they are more likely to be serious. On average, one of every 32 reported home Christmas tree fires results in a death compared to an average of one death per 143 total reported home fires.

The Los Alamos Police Department has announced that Dispatcher Cari Mace graduated Dec. 14 as valedictorian of Public Safety Telecommunicator Class #141.
Dispatcher Mace was one of 25 students from 17 different agencies in Class #141, and she had an average exam rate of 99.75 percent.

Street Lights Off For Farolito Viewing At These Locations

The Los Alamos County Traffic & Streets Division will be turning off the power to various streetlights to enhance the viewing of holiday farolitos.
The streetlights will be turned off Monday, Dec. 24 and will be restored on Wednesday, Dec. 26
For safety purposes, the Traffic & Streets Division requests that all vehicles and trailers be moved to off street parking during the full period that lights will be off. If this is not possible, it is recommended that the vehicles and trailers be silhouetted by farolitos.

After the Department of Public Utilities implemented new utility billing software last July, the Department waived all late fees while it worked through billing delays and problems with the bill presentation.
Beginning Jan. 1, 2019, however, unpaid balances that are delinquent by more than 30 days, will be assessed a late fee of 1.5 percent.
Department officials encourage customers with unpaid, delinquent balances to contact its office prior to Jan. 1.
