Winter weather is here, and Los Alamos County would like to remind residents of some important safety considerations for motorists to take in order to make their travel as safe as possible.

County Provides Winter Sidewalk Clearing Guidelines

COUNTY News:
 
During the winter months, Los Alamos County would like to remind residents that it is important to keep sidewalks clear of snow and ice so that they remain passable for postal workers, children walking to school and others who need to use them.
 
When possible, and depending upon available resources, County crews will conduct sidewalk-clearing operations by removing snow first from the adopted “safe routes to school” and then move to other selected sidewalks. The County does not clear every sidewalk due to limited resources.

With the recent snowfall in Los Alamos, officials with the Department of Public Utilities remind customers to maintain access to meters and that meters are cleared of snow and ice. This will ensure that DPU can bill customers on actual meter reads rather than estimating reads.

County Environmental Services Trash/Recycle Update

COUNTY News:

Due to icy roads, Los Alamos County Environmental Services crews were unable to complete recycle pick up in the Denver Steel and White Rock area for residents scheduled to receive trash/recycle collection Friday, Jan. 4. 

Crews will return to collect recycle material Monday in these areas and residents are asked to place recycle carts out by 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 7.

2018 proved to be an interesting year for Los Alamos County. Efforts to enhance local tourism expanded, more housing projects were approved and a few members of council concluded their terms.

Los Alamos County Fire Department was most impacted in 2018 by the unplanned retirement of three of its chiefs. Division Chief Paul Grano, Battalion Chief Joseph Candelaria and Training Division Chief Mike Gill each retired.

With the announcement that Los Alamos National Laboratory will remain closed Thursday due to weather conditions, Atomic City Transit will not offer peak bus service tomorrow – but bus routes will be back up and running otherwise.

County Update On Christmas Tree Recycling

COUNTY News:

Local Christmas tree recycling won’t begin until next week.

Los Alamos County Environmental Services is asking residents not to put Christmas trees curbside before Jan. 8 because if the community gets another storm Saturday and Sunday, the discarded trees may be frozen to the ground, making it difficult for crews to collect them as the process is manual collection rather than automated.

Residents with Tuesday as their pick up day (Western, Quemazon and Denver Steels area and other streets near those areas), Los Alamos County Environmental Services will be picking up trash Friday, Jan. 4 on those streets. This will provide snow clearing crews some additional time Thursday to clear snow back further to  curbs and sidewalks in these areas.

In light of today’s heavy snowfall event, the Public Works Department has announced the following change in services for Wednesday, Jan. 2:

Atomic City Transit: No fixed route service. Dial-a-ride will be available. Call 661-RIDE.

Trash/Recycling: Those residents in Los Alamos who did not receive pick up today (due to the holiday) who had been informed their pick up day would be Wednesday Jan. 2: Pick up tomorrow (Wednesday) is canceled for Western Area and Quemazon. No new pick up date has been set yet.

County Update: Road Conditions Remain Hazardous

COUNTY Traffic Alert Update:

Pajarito Mountain is OPEN; however, the Traffic Division staff urges residents who decide to travel on Camp May Road to be advised of nearly-impassable road conditions. 

The first section of Camp May Road is slightly more than one lane in width, which means passing oncoming traffic will be difficult.

For those who decide to head to Pajarito today, driving a vehicle with high clearance, four wheel drive and tire chains is advisable.
