Council Invites Organizations To Serve As Color Guard

COUNTY News:

With school resuming in the middle of August, the Los Alamos County Council would like to remind residents that there is an open invitation to Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, along with other local organizations, to serve as Color Guard at any Council Regular or Work Session.

Presentation of the flags by a Color Guard can occur at the beginning of any Council meeting at 6 p.m. on a Tuesday in either Council Chambers or White Rock Fire Station 3.

Los Alamos County Animal Shelter New Hours Aug. 14

SHELTER News:

In an effort to better serve the public, the Los Alamos County Animal Shelter is altering its business hours.

Effective Monday, Aug. 14, the Shelter will increase hours open to the public on weekends, while closing a half hour earlier through the week and all day Thursday.

The weekend is the busiest time for the Shelter and by increasing weekend hours, the Shelter Staff anticipate better customer service opportunities and increased availability to the public.

In a joint statement today, Los Alamos Police Chief Dino Sgambellone and Fire Chief Troy Hughes encouraged the community to support the 2nd Annual Battle of the Badges blood drive.

The drive is at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Hall, 3700 Canyon Road in Los Alamos:

  • Noon to 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 3; and
  • 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4.

Reading Richard Nebel’s attack on the idea of a functional sheriff’s office left me wondering two things (link). One, whether discourse in Los Alamos has been reduced to ad hominem attacks and two, whether Mr. Nebel has any sense of history.

Los Alamos County’s law enforcement, first responders, emergency management, as well as various County departments will participate Thursday, Aug. 3 in a functional emergency exercise. Developed by the Department of Public Utilities, the exercise simulates a threat to the Los Alamos Canyon Dam.

Los Alamos County Submits Comments To NNSA On Draft Solicitation For LANL Site Management And Operating Contract Competition

Both County Council Chair David Izraelevitz and County Manager Harry Burgess submitted letters to NNSA Wednesday outlining concerns about the draft solicitation for LANL site management and operating contract competition, just ahead of the July 26 comment deadline.

Burgess’ letter highlighted primary concerns that the County would like to see addressed, and the letter from Chair Izraelevitz offered more details and attached documentation.

County Council Tables Sheriff’s Office Resolution

It was a roller coaster ride during the Los Alamos County Council’s special meeting Wednesday night in council chambers. The room was packed with residents who offered their thoughts on Councilor Pete Sheehey’s proposed resolution to restore the duties of the Sheriff’s Office. The resolution would provide a budget of $200,000 to cover the duties, hire a fulltime deputy, an administrative assistant and to attend training and other expenses. White Rock Without Power

Update: White Rock power outage UPDATE at 3:30 p.m.: the County’s Traffic Division crews are heading to White Rock with portable generators to power the intersection traffic lights on SR4 (inside White Rock) during the evening work commute, which will begin in about an hour.

A downed transmission line is the cause of a wide spread power outage that began at approximately 2:30 p.m. today in White Rock.

 At 6 p.m. today, the Los Alamos County Council will hold a hearing and voting on resolution 17-08, which advocates for an expansion of the duties of the sheriff’s office.

UPDATE: LAPD Dispatch Phones Back In Service

LAPD News:

The Los Alamos Police Department Dispatch telephones (non-emergency number 505.662.8222) are back in service.

The pnoes were temporarily unavailable for about 30 minutes this morning while the phone system was moved over to a new UPS as part of a system upgrade.
