Letter To The Editor: Call For Council To Withdraw Open Space To Mixed Use Amendment Before Adopting Comprehensive Plan

To the Los Alamos County Council:

We object to the Council’s amendment of the Comprehensive Plan changing the parcels south of the airport and #502 from open space to multi-use after numerous meetings during which the public saw them marked as open space.

The fact that the members of the Planning and Zoning Commission could see no better designation than open space for the parcels south of the airport and #502 should give pause to the Council. Those pieces of land are narrow and are certainly beyond the current boundary of development on that side of the highway. Read More

During the past year, many community members participated in drafting a new Comprehensive Plan for Los Alamos County. Within the Plan is a Future Land Use map, which is designed to be a “guide to land development and preservation decisions.”

Public Invited To Swearing In Ceremony Dec. 13

COUNTY News:

The public is invited to attend the official “swearing in” ceremony for newly elected officials on at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13 in the Los Alamos County Council Chambers, inside the Municipal Building.

County Councilors Pete Sheehey, Christine Chandler and Antonio Maggiore will be sworn in, along with County Clerk Naomi Maestas and Probate Judge Anne Nobile.

The ceremony is being hosted by County Clerk Sharon Stover and her staff in the Clerk’s office.

Police Operation Targets Porch Package Thieves

LAPD News:

The Los Alamos Police Department Investigations Unit is conducting covert operations this holiday season as a proactive measure against package theft from citizen’s front porches. 

“We want to be proactive this season to deter and possibly catch any would-be thieves who target packages left at Los Alamos residences,” Cmdr. Oliver Morris said.

As the increase in online shopping continues each year, the draw toward a trend tagged as “Porch Pirates” also increases, he said.

County Offers Free Sand For Farolitos

COUNTY News:

Each year, the Los Alamos County Traffic & Streets Division provides free farolito sand as a courtesy to residents.

Sand is now available at these locations:

  • Overlook Park – in south Parking Lot;
  • Urban Park – in 42nd St. Parking Area;
  • Sullivan Field – west side of Parking Lot;
  • Barranca Mesa – at the end of Barranca Rd @ Navajo; and
  • North Mesa – at the north end of Soccer Field Parking Lot.

Residents are asked to limit the amount of sand taken to the amount needed for their farolitos.
