Letter To The Editor: Sierra Club Rio Grande Chapter Endorses Pete Sheehey For Los Alamos County Council
By Chapter Political Chair Susan Martin, and The most powerful way to protect our water, wildlife, land and climate is through good environmental policy, and the most powerful way to ensure good policy is by electing pro-environment candidates.
The Sierra Club Rio Grande Chapter sends questionnaires to and interviews eligible candidates, and two chapter committees must approve every endorsement by a two-thirds vote in order for a candidate to be endorsed. (Incumbents can be judged by their public record rather than a questionnaire.)It is with an assessment
Letter To The Editor: Is Marco Lucero A ‘Constitutional Sheriff?’
By STEPHANIE NAKHLEHBefore the question of abolishing the Office of the Los Alamos County Sheriff came up, I was unaware of an organization known as the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association (CSPOA). Although its name sounds innocuous, CSPOA is in reality a radical association with a troubling history—and Sheriff Marco Lucero appears to be part of it.
CSPOA was formed in 2011 by an Arizona sheriff named Richard Mack. Mack and CSPOA don’t merely claim that sheriffs are duty-bound to uphold the US Constitution, they claim that sheriffs are the highest law-enforcement Read More
Letter To The Editor: Why I’m Supporting Chris Chandler For Los Alamos County Council
By MARK JONESI strongly encourage Los Alamos citizens to vote for Chris Chandler for Los Alamos County Council. I have known and worked with Chris for years and have great respect for her abilities and judgment.
Her dedication to the community is shown by her previous service on the county council, the planning and zoning commission, and charter review committees. She is a hard worker who makes sure she fully understands an issue before recommending what action she thinks appropriate. She expresses her positions and the reasons for them clearly and understandably, and is able Read More

By MARIE CHIRAVALLESince our county was incorporated we have always had a sheriff. The sheriff has a limited but important role in our local government; and, by all accounts our current sheriff has done an excellent job. Why is there a need now to change the system that has worked for 40 plus years?
I have read the viewpoints favoring abolishing the office and in my opinion I find no substantial reason to change the system. We will not save any tax dollars by moving the responsibilities to the police department they will need to be compensated for added duties; and as far as liability is concerned Read More

Pirates Invade County’s Annual Employee Luncheon!
A disconcerting band of pirates, suspiciously resembling County senior management, are spotted this morning hanging around Oppie and Groves outside Fuller Lodge. The pirate on the far left bears a strong resemblance to County Manager Harry Burgess, while the wench with a sword standing fourth from left is likely related to County Communications Director Julie Habiger and the man standing second from the right wearing a red do-rag under a skull and crossbones hat is thought to be a first cousin of Police Chief Dino Sgambellone. This unruly bunch is expected to gather at 11 a.m. today inside Fuller Read More

Nobile: Why Am I Running For Probate Judge?
By Anne NobileLast winter I became aware there would be an opportunity to continue being of service to Los Alamos County in a capacity I would enjoy. With the encouragement of longtime friends and fellow volunteers, I soon applied.
I was appointed by the County Council June 21 for a term lasting until Dec. 31.
My letter of interest reviewed my experience as a paralegal, applying government regulations, such as OSHA and ANSI, in my job at the Lab and volunteering as a Planning & Zoning Commissioner for six years. I described additional volunteer work such as 13 years Read More
Sheehey: What I Have To Offer
By PETE SHEEHEYWhat do I have to offer the citizens of Los Alamos, if re-elected to County Council? I have learned a lot in my first term on Council, and worked for the things residents told me they wanted when I knocked on their doors four years ago: to go ahead with the most important investments for our future, but don’t spend too much, and make sure we get good value for taxpayers’ dollars. We went ahead with projects like the Teen Center, the Nature Center, and the new White Rock Library, Senior and Youth Centers, and we have still maintained Read More
Letter To The Editor: Los Alamos Needs Steven Girrens On Council
By RICK REISS
Los Alamos County Council Chair
Exciting times are coming for Los Alamos. Between changes in the management of the laboratory and implementation of the new Legacy Remediation campaigns, we find ourselves working hard at the state legislature and with the federal legislators and bureaucrats. A combination of skills is necessary to coordinate with state and federal legislators. I find the efforts in Washington to be important, difficult and demanding.
Councilor Steven Girrens has demonstrated keen awareness of issues and data while representing Los Alamos in Washington. Read More

Letter To The Editor: Join Me In Voting ‘For’ Question 1
By JOANN JOHNSONI have lived in Los Alamos for more than 50 years. I have been actively engaged in community activities during that time. Nine years as Chairman of the Republican Party of Los Alamos, eight years as County Assessor, seven years on the Parks and Recreation Board and two terms on the LARSO Board of Directors, as well as many youth activities when my children were growing up.
I have seen many sheriffs come and go. Most were content to serve in the capacity assigned to our sheriff. A few have wanted to expand the duties of the sheriff. The right for Los Alamos to decide whether to Read More
