Letter To The Editor: Thoughts About Council Candidates

By KRISTIN HENDERSON
Los Alamos County Council

For those who haven’t yet voted – there are three seats open on the Los Alamos County Council, and six people running.

I personally believe that Council has been making good progress in town for the last few years, and I would like to see that continue. Accordingly, I would really like to see the two incumbents get re-elected – Steve Girrens and Pete Sheehey.

Steve has always been an advocate for youth and families and is a big supporter of the County working with our Schools. Having an excellent School system is critical

Letter To The Editor: Marco Lucero Responds To Question About Constitutional Sheriffs Organization

By Sheriff Marco Lucero
Los Alamos County

This is in response to the Letter to the Editor by Stephanie Nakhleh, published in the Oct. 30 edition of the Los Alamos Daily Post, (link). Ms. Nakhleh asks why I don’t answer the question of whether I’m a member of the Constitutional Sheriffs Organization. I actually answered this question in my June 13, 2016 Letter to the Editor published in the Los Alamos Daily Post, (link).

I am not nor have I ever been a member of this organization. Anyone can place your name online and say what they want to further their cause. I do profess my allegiance Read More

Letter To The Editor: Vote For Sharon Stover And Steve Girrens

By JAMES CHROBOCINSKI
Los Alamos County Councilor

As a County Councilor and small business owner I have had the pleasure to work closely with Sharon Stover and Steve Girrens over the last couple years. To put it simply they are just “good folk” who care deeply about this community.  No one works harder than this husband and wife team to make this a wonderful community.

Sharon Stover was raised in this region and has spent her adult life volunteering and serving in many roles including non-profits, elected, and volunteer. It is absolutely unquestioned that it was her leadership that led our Read More

Letter To The Editor: Clarifying Same Sex Marriage License Litigation Case

By BECKY EHLER
Former County Attorney

I would like to clarify the cost and the position of the Los Alamos County Clerk during the same sex marriage license litigation case.

First, Los Alamos County did not expend any funds for representing the Clerk, Sharon Stover in the litigation. The entire Los Alamos County case was handled by the County’s in-house legal
staff. Likewise, Los Alamos County did not pay any of the cost of the Supreme Court case where the issue was decided for the entire state.

Second, the response to the temporary order did not indicate that Ms. Stover opposed same sex marriage. Read More

The Los Alamos Police Department has responded to two traffic crashes in the last two days at the intersection of Trinity and Oppenheimer.

These crashes occurred at 8:05 a.m. Wednesday and 7:47 a.m. Thursday.

The sun played a contributing factor into both of these crashes, which resulted in two people being transported to the hospital with injuries.

“We urge all of our citizens and commuters to use extreme caution when approaching this intersection, 7:30-8:30 a.m. due to the position of the sun in relation to the traffic control devices at this intersection,” Cmdr. Preston Ballew Read More

Letter To The Editor: Response To ‘LWV Forum Incident’

By GEORGE CHANDLER
Los Alamos

I have no knowledge other than press reports and John Horne’s letter regarding the “LWV Forum Incident,” reported by him in the Daily Post.

But Mr. Horne escalates the incident into “an attempt to suppress political speech” and “an instance of corruption” in the Los Alamos Police Department that supposedly illustrates the need for a Sheriff in Los Alamos. He could not be further from the truth. Quite the contrary, the incident exemplifies the confusion surrounding the Sheriff’s Office and the status of so-called deputies complicating the enforcement of law in Read More

Letter To The Editor: Is Mr. Lucero A ‘Constitutional Sheriff’? Why Not Ask Him?

By KHAL SPENCER
Los Alamos

Stephanie Nakhleh painted a grim picture of Sheriff Marco Lucero as being part of an anti-government “…dangerous group of radicals…” called the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association. Of course, most of what we learn from her letter is Ms. Nakhleh’s opinion of CSPOA, and we learn even less about Sheriff Lucero other than that his name appears on several web sites. This tactic to discredit the man is a form of ad hominem attack referred to as the “bad company fallacy” and is reminiscent of McCarthyism

Letter To The Editor: Naomi Maestas For County Clerk

By MIKE ADAMS
Los Alamos

I’m a Democrat, and have been since I registered to vote. I probably will be until I am but a memory. I am a Democrat and I’m voting for Naomi Maestas!

I know Naomi, and one thing everyone says about her is that she is sweet, but there are a few other things that you should know, and these are what is important:

  • She cares about democracy. I sat down with Naomi to ask her about why she is running for the position and she told me that she talked about her pride in participating in democracy. She honestly feels privileged to participate in having people vote for their

Letter To The Editor: Vote No On Question 1

By DANIEL SCHMIDT
Los Alamos

I recently moved to Los Alamos from Los Angeles. I am a retired Los Angeles Police Officer.

I have seen the politicization of the LAPD when they removed Chief Daryl Gates after the 1994 riots, which was initially a lifetime appointment. This lifetime appointment was done for the specific reason of not having the specter of corruption over the chief’s office and being corrupted by the elected city officials.

This has changed and the chief’s position is a 5-year term of service, with the possibility of a second 5-year term. What

FOS News:

Godiva the cat is a beautiful Smoky Persian who ended up at the shelter when her owner moved.

This sweet girl will need some time to adjust to her new home, as big changes can be a bit stressful for her. She will also need a patient owner who is willing to brush her – she came in with lots of uncomfortable mats and had to be shaved, and she doesn’t want to be traumatized by another round of shaving. She now sports a lion cut.

Letter To The Editor: Stover Lowered Taxes And Advanced Clean Energy

By ROBERT GIBSON
Former Los Alamos County Councilor

An intense political advertising campaign totally misrepresents elements of Sharon Stover’s public service record. I’d like to set the record straight on two issues that occurred while I was on the County Council with Sharon.

First, Sharon voted for the biggest tax DECREASE in County history, exactly the opposite of what the ads claim. The “biggest increase” referencedwas proposed by the School Board and approved by voters in 2009 to start the long-delayed renovation and remodeling of our public schools. Council played no role in deciding Read More
