Pet Of The Week: Maggie The Cat

SHELTER News:

Maggie is a 13-year-old gray tabby recently surrendered to the shelter.

She’s hanging out in a larger kennel, since the kittens are a bit too rambunctious for her, but she loves company from visitors and volunteers. Maggie just wants a quiet home with someone to snuggle with. This sweet kitty is declawed, so she will need to be an INDOOR ONLY cat (as we prefer that all of our cats be, declawed or not).

Shelter hours are noon to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturdays and noon to 3 p.m., Sundays.

Councilor Column: About Our Incorporated County

By DAVID IZRAELEVITZ
Los Alamos County Councilor

What aspect of Los Alamos County makes us different from the city of Santa Fe and the city of Albuquerque, yet similar to the cities of San Francisco, Nashville, Denver, Philadelphia and Anchorage?

The cities of Santa Fe and Albuquerque reside on a portion of Santa Fe and Bernalillo counties, but San Francisco, and the rest of the list are combined city-counties, as is Los Alamos County. We are unique  in this respect in New Mexico, so when I go around the state and mention that I am a Los Alamos County councilor, my fellow office holders look at Read More

Chandler: Los Alamos’ Unique Form Of Government

By CHRIS CHANDLER
Los Alamos County Council Candidate
Former Charter Review Committee Member

People often refer to Los Alamos as unique. I sometimes think that the “uniqueness” adjective is overused. But there is one area where Los Alamos is truly unique – the structure under which we govern ourselves. The county is a H class, incorporated home rule county. By constitutional and statutory design there is no other community in the state like us.

Los Alamos County was created in 1949 from lands located in Sandoval and Santa Fe Counties. The county has a total area of approximately 110 square miles. Read More

Letter To The Editor: Doubts About County Property Clean-Up Effort

By CHRISTINE WEAVER
Los Alamos

I love the optimistic article about county clean-up and the idea that code enforcement will actually make people comply.

I had a friend in town last summer for a class reunion and we drove down a street where he used to live in the 60s. It was 41st Street between Urban and Sycamore. I watched his face fall as we drove past his former home and he commented that the entire street resembled a shanty town. There are houses with untamed yards, trash (obviously treasure to some) sitting on front yards, and unattended dead trees down the entire block –
