Public Encouraged To Listen To NMED’s Presentation On Hexavalent Chromium Plume
COUNTY News:
The public is encouraged to hear a presentation from the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) regarding the hexavalent chromium plume at the Board of Public Utilities meeting at 5:30 p.m., June 3, 2026.
Hexavalent chromium was used by the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) from the 1950s–1970s. Contaminated water was periodically released into Sandia Canyon and Mortandad Canyon during this time frame. LANL contracts N3B to remediate contaminated groundwater, and N3B must work with NMED’s regulations for contamination levels.

By MICHAEL R. ALTHERR, Ph.D.
Los Alamos
If you have not yet voted and plan to vote in person in the Democratic Primary for County Council, let me offer something to think about. I have had the opportunity to work directly with two of the candidates for the Democratic nomination for Council. Both Melanee Hand and David Hampton are the kind of individuals that I want working for me on the Council.
They are true public servants. Melanee and I served together on the Los Alamos Mountaineers Board. More recently, Melanee was the Council liaison to the Transportation Board where I served for four years. From Read More

Oswald Endorses Melanee Hand For County Council
By GENEVIEVE OSWALD
Town of Taos Councilor & Mayor Pro Tem
I am Genevieve Oswald, a Town of Taos Councilor. Now, not being from your community, I don’t really have much place to offer an opinion or endorsement in your local election — but after serving alongside Los Alamos County Councilor Melanee Hand on the North Central Regional Transit District Board (NCRTD Blue Bus) for the past two and a half years, I feel at least somewhat qualified to throw my voice out into the wind.
What’s important to know is that the Blue Bus doesn’t stop at county lines, and neither do the challenges our communities Read More

Op-Ed: Be Forewarned…
By CHRISTINA STAFFORD
White Rock
Be Forewarned … the signs of N.M. 4 work beginning 5/28/26. It actually started today 5/29/26. The state is repaving. That’s great! HOWEVER, do they EVER plan for a temporary lane? What about Emergency Response events?
With only one road in and out of White Rock (without going through the Jemez, or possessing a LANL badge), this is not just inconvenient, it is dangerous and not well planned for.
May I remind the community, we are currently at a Stage 2 FIRE RESTRICTION! Judging from my sitting at a standstill this morning (9:20 a.m.), what provisions have been made Read More
