Property Tax Reminder: First Half Due Date Coming Up
COUNTY News:
Los Alamos County property tax bills for 2013 were mailed to property owners last week. The first half installment becomes delinquent after Tuesday, Dec. 10.
Payment must either be made in person at the 311 Customer Care Center by 5 p.m., Dec. 10 or postmarked by midnight that same day to avoid late payment penalty and interest charges.

Letter to the Editor: Ashley Pond Is Real Success Story
By TOM SANDFORDOn March 13, 2009, I wrote a letter to the Parks and Recreation Board members and the County Administrator about the sad state of Ashley Pond and what an eyesore it presented to the public.
Getting no response, I expressed my concern to the County Administrator and the County Counselors on April 13, 2009. Council Approves $365,248 to Aid Struggling Commercial Air Service Program
Airport Manager Peter Soderquist presented to Council this evening a commercial air service update and asked for a budget revision of $365,248 to the contract with the County to fund the commercial air service program, which includes $100,000 for associated marketing. Progress continues on the clubhouse with window installation taking place. The HVAC work is nearly complete, sheet rock work in the basement has started and a great deal of site work is taking place in the parking lot.
Speaking of the parking lot, we appreciate the patience that players have shown, as the contractor works to complete this portion of construction site work. We expect this work to be completed in mid- November and players to have access again to the main entrance and parking lot.

Voting is now open to select the 2013 Los Alamos County Business Recycler of the Year. The three finalists selected by the Los Alamos County Environmental Sustainability Board are CB FOX, the Los Alamos Cooperative Market and Los Alamos Monitor. UPDATE: County Traffic Engineer Kyle Zimmerman contacted the Los Alamos Daily Post after learning of these confusing traffic signs through the photo published here Thursday.
Zimmerman reported that he contacted the Eastern Area 2 project contractor’s project superintendent Thursday afternoon, who told him that the sign orientation would be corrected this morning.

County Employees Hold Food Drive
During the County’s annual “Employee Thank You Luncheon” hosted by the County Council on Halloween at Fuller Lodge, employees dropped off cans of food and other non-perishable items as they entered the lodge for lunch. County employees came up with the idea of holding a food drive a few weeks ago when the federal government shut down. The decision was made to collect donations during the luncheon – hoping that on a day when they are all “treated” to a great lunch, it would be a good reminder that there are still those in the community who may not be as fortunate. Police Respond to Graffiti Incident at Aspen Elementary School
LAPD News:
Los Alamos police report that at approximately 9:27 a.m., Oct. 8, Ofc. Ben Irving was dispatched to Aspen Elementary School in reference to graffiti on multiple buildings.
Irving made contact with the reporting party at the school who stated that she came into work that morning and found graffiti on the “music” portable, “school office” portable and on the north door of room 120.
Photos were taken of the graffiti and attached to the case file, Irving stated in his report, adding that all of the graffiti was done with brown spray paint.

By DIMAS M. CHAVEZI moved to Los Alamos as a young boy in August 1943. At that time Ashley Pond was just a simple pond with some green colored canoes that had been supplied by the Military to navigate the small area of water.
I was present at this pond when the first Los Alamos fatal accident happened when a young boy fell out of a canoe, got tangled in deep weeds and drowned.
