Breaking News: Los Alamos Police Arrest Suspects in Check Fraud Case

LAPD News:

Los Alamos Police have arrested three suspects in a check fraud case and two suspects remain at large.

The LAPD Investigations Unit has been working several cases of mail theft, specifically in the White Rock area. Suspects have been targeting victims who leave checks in their mailboxes for the postman to pick up. The suspects have been altering those checks and attempting to cash them.

Council Approves Appointment of New Police Chief

Dino P. Sgambellone

The County Council unanimously approved the appointment of Dino P. Sgambellone as the new police chief of the Los Alamos Police Department.

Sgambellone assumes his new duties next week and will receive an annual salary of $135,600, which is slightly below the midpoint salary range for the police chief position.

He also will receive 40 hours of leave time to move his family to Los Alamos from Ohio where he worked for a local police department for 22 years, the last three as chief of police.

Council Approves Newly Structured Gas Rate

Manager Bob Westervelt, Department of Public Utilities – Finance/Administration, answers questions before Council unanimously approved an amended ordinance relating to gas rates. Based on the variable nature of the cost of gas, including the cost of transportation, Council approved a consumption charge broken into a fixed and variable component. The fixed consumption charge is established based on the budgeted operating and capital expenditures not covered by fund balance. County Granted Presidential Disaster Declaration

Wearing his hat as Los Alamos County Emergency Management coordinator as opposed to acting police chief, Philmont Taylor announced at tonight’s County Council meeting that Los Alamos has been granted a Presidential Disaster Declaration for last month’s flood damage. A Presidential Disaster Declaration is an action by the President, pursuant to the Compact of Free Association, to make U.S. federal funding available for emergency relief and reconstruction assistance. Update on Condition of Los Alamos Trails

Los Alamos County Open Space Specialist Craig Martin has completed his assessment of trail conditions following the Friday the 13th storms.

Trail Conditions as of Oct. 17:

Due to flooding and construction work on the Los Alamos Reservoir, the road to the reservoir is currently closed.

Floods damaged a section of the Pueblo Canyon Rim Trail near the Los Alamos Cooperative Market. Look for trail detour signs that lead across an entry road to the New Mexico Consortium Building to avoid the damaged and hazardous section of trail.

County Rink Offers Ice Skating Lessons Free Day

Have you ever been curious about ice skating lessons? Los Alamos County Ice Rink is giving you the chance to meet our skating instructors and staff to try a free mini-skating lesson. Instructors will also be doing skills testing so students will know at what level of lesson to register.

Skating lessons begin at 1 p.m., Saturday Nov. 16 for all skaters 10 years of age and under and 1:45 p.m. for skaters 11 through adult. Be sure to get there early to try on skates and meet with instructors prior to going out on the ice.

Enthusiastic Response to County’s Fall Brush and Bulk Item Collection

Residents such as this one in White Rock are placing a large volume of material out for the Fall Brush and Bulk Item Collection and therefore collection is taking closer to two weeks for each designated area. The County’s  Environmental Services Division Brush and Bulk Item Collection program is offered to residents with curbside refuse collection four times a year in order to assist with the disposal of bulky items and brush (branches, leaves, pine needles, etc.) The program is limited to brush, furniture, mattresses and large appliances.
