A  major remodel in underway at Los Alamos Fire Department Station 6 at 457 East Road near the airport.

Work Underway to Improve Ashley Pond

COUNTY News:

Work gets underway this week for improvements to Ashley Pond Park. The site will be marked for underground utilities, irrigation heads will be relocated, two trees will be transplanted and the contractor’s site construction fencing will be installed.

The emptying of the pond will begin by pumping the water out of the pond for irrigation of the surrounding park area. Any standing water remaining in the bottom of the pond will be pumped onto nearby turf areas using pumps provided by the County.

County Reminds Public: Sign Up for Code RED Emergency Notifications to Cell Phones

COUNTY News:

Los Alamos County would like to encourage the public to sign up for Code RED emergency notifications for their cell phone.

The mobile app is especially useful for commuters or students working in Los Alamos this summer.

Anyone in an effected geographic area for an alert will immediately receive a notification, providing the user with both a text and a voice file of the alert.

Alert: County Is Under Stage II Fire Restrictions

Effective Wednesday, June 5, 2013 and in concert with the U.S. Forest Service,  National Park Service and Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos County is under Stage II Fire Restrictions.

The following acts are prohibited until further notice:

  • Building, maintaining, attending or using an open fire, campfire, charcoal or wood stove on all Los Alamos County lands including fires in developed campgrounds or improved sites.

The annual Fall and Winter County Field Users Meeting is set for 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., June 26 at the Aquatic Center Training Room, 2760 Canyon Road.

White Rock Visitor Center Welcomes Record Numbers

Breaking all previous records, 1,917 people visited the White Rock Visitor Center over Memorial Day Weekend.

The Los Alamos Meeting and Visitor Bureau reports that the confirmed tally includes visitors who used the facility between May 24 and May 27. The busiest days were Sunday and Monday with 670 people visiting the facilty on Sunday alone.

What a joy it is to see the baskets of flowers on the lamp posts in the downtown area!

 
Various traffic islands in Los Alamos and White Rock are also aglow with colorful iris and other well landscaped plantings.
 
My husband Ken was chairman of the first Los Alamos County Beautification Committee back in the 1960s. He would be delighted, as I am, to see the improvements since that time.

Most of the discussion of the county’s proposed well project has focused on wellhead impacts. However, I believe there is a greater concern: potential impact to the springs in White Rock Canyon.

This project is designed to extract ground water before it becomes surface water flowing into the Rio Grande. Ground water becomes surface water by emerging through springs.
