SANTA FE – Public Education Secretary Kurt Steinhaus issued the following statement today regarding the shooting death of a West Mesa High School student in Albuquerque:

New Mexico School Board Association 2022 Excellence In Student Achievement Award Nominations Due By March 4

The last day to submit nominations for the New Mexico School Board Association’s (NMSBA) 2022 Excellence in Student Achievement Award is Friday, March 4.

This award seeks to acknowledge school leaders, staff and other individuals who have played an important role in improving student achievement. The nominee can be an administrator, teacher, staff member, parent, community member or volunteer.

The nomination process is open to the community, and from there, the Los Alamos School Board will choose the final recipient.

Preschool Family Math Night is set for 5:30-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 2 at Barranca Mesa Elementary and Mountain Elementary in Los Alamos, and Chamisa Elementary in White Rock.

The Preschool Family Math Night is open to students and families enrolled in the Preschool programs at these school sites. 

This is the second of four Family Engagement Nights, which are part of the Los Alamos Public Schools (LAPS) PreK program.

LAHS Juniors Chosen For 2022 Peace Ambassador Program

Los Alamos High School juniors Erin Gattis, Marina Naranjo and Solenne Thelliez have been selected to participate in the 2022 Peace Ambassador Program.

They are among 15 young women selected from 350 applicants to participate in this unique program.

Peace Ambassadors is a six-month program that develops young women’s leadership and global networking. Female teens (15-18 years old) will develop skills such as public speaking, media literacy, compassionate listening and emotional intelligence.

La Vista Church of the Nazarene in White Rock is hosting a free Vacation Bible School (VBS) for children in kindergarten through 6th grade at 15 Grand Canyon Dr. in White Rock.

VBS runs 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. March 17 and 18 (Parent-Teacher Conferences).

League Of Women Voters Supports Crucial Education Bills

Education was the big winner in this year’s legislative session. The League of Women Voters of New Mexico, led in this effort by Meredith Machen and assisted by Eileen VanWie, lobbied for several important bills that passed.

Besides the usual allocations that constitute more than half of the state budget, about $35 million was added to support Indian Education programs that address the Yazzie-Martinez court orders.

Across the board increases of 7 percent will go to all educational personnel.
