Los Alamos Public Schools was recently ranked #1 in Best School Districts in New Mexico by Niche.
 
Niche’s 2020 Best School Districts ranking is based on analysis of key statistics and millions of reviews from students and parents using data from the U.S. Department of Education.
 
Ranking factors include state test scores, college readiness, graduation rates, SAT and ACT scores, teacher quality, public school district ratings and more.

Natalie Aulwes Girl Scout Gold Award Project Offers Free Engineering Workshop For Girls 2-4 P.M. Saturday

For phase two of her Girl Scout Gold Award Project, Los Alamos High School Senior Natalie Aulwes is leading a free workshop, for girls ages 11-14 years old in Los Alamos and the surrounding area, to explore the basics of engineering concepts and design.
 
ProjectY cowork Los Alamos at 150 Central Park Square is hosting this special workshop for 20 girls, 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31.

Christine Bernstein filed for the District 3 (Aspen) seat on the Los Alamos School Board today at the County Municipal Building. Pat Soran Files To Retain Position 3 On UNM-LA Advisory Board

Candidate Pat Soran, seated, and Campaign Manager Rick Reiss were at the Los Alamos Municipal Building this afternoon to file for Soran’s current seat, Position 3 on the UNM-Los Alamos Advisory Board. David Hampton is a candidate for Position 3 on the UNM-Los Alamos Advisory Board. He filed this afternoon with the Los Alamos County Clerk’s Office. Melanie Colgan filed as a candidate for School Board to serve the Barranca and North Mesa communities (District 4) this afternoon at the Los Alamos Municipal Building. Julia Baker filed as a candidate for school board representing District 4, which includes Barranca and North Mesas. ‘My family has been blessed by the schools here,’ Baker said. ‘I have a background in teaching so I think I’d be a good fit for the school board.’ Baker taught fifth grade in Utah and currently stays at home to take care of her five children, ages 3-13. Laura Burrows filed for Position 3 on the UNM-Los Alamos Advisory Board this morning. She also filed by proxy for Chris Luchini who is running for Position 4 on the UNM-LA Advisory Board. Burrows said she is running to become more involved with the Los Alamos community. A longtime teacher, Burrows currently serves as a substitute teacher for both the Los Alamos Public Schools and UNM-LA’s ESL and High School Equivalency programs. Morrie Pongratz First To File For School Board

Morrie Pongratz is the first to file this morning at the County Municipal Building as a candidate for Los Alamos School Board. Pongratz resides in the Aspen District and served on the School Board from 2003-2007. During that term the board helped start the Juvenile Justice Advisory Board and the LAPS Foundation. Pongratz now serves on the boards of both organizations as well as several other boards. Pongratz is now fully retired and said laughing that his wife encouraged him to run for school board.
