Udall, Heinrich Announce $18.6 Million For STEM Education At Hispanic-Serving NM Universities

WASHINGTON, D.C.  Today Oct. 25, U.S. Sens. Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich announced that five New Mexico universities will receive more than $18.6 million to support Hispanic and low-income students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Back in August 2013, UNM-LA tried, and FAILED, to stick the property owners of Los Alamos with an increase to their property taxes to pay for whatever the University wanted to spend it on. 
 
Now they want to try again by including a Mil Levy on the Los Alamos Public School Bond ballot in January, with the blessing of the Los Alamos Public School board.

Strong public schools are one of the corner stones of a successful community. The Los Alamos Public Schools are seeking approval for general obligation bonds valued at about $11 million. It is important to note that the LA school district has relied upon us the Los Alamos community for school renovation funding since 2009.

The LA Schools recently held open houses for the community members to see the current state of our schools. It was pretty clear where prior bond monies have improved our facilities and where renovations are still very much needed. Read More
