Letter To The Editor: Stover’s Negative Campaign Mailer

By EDWARD BIRNBAUM
Los Alamos

I’m writing to ask Sharon Stover to stop playing politics with our local schools.

We recently received a piece of very negative campaign literature in the mail. This mailer came, not from a PAC over which the Stover campaign has no control, but rather from the Stover campaign itself (Deborah Reiss, Treasurer), which presumably means that Ms. Stover approves the message.

The mailer has one of those ugly black and white photos of a frowning Stephanie Garcia Richard, and the headline that Garcia Richard voted to take $47 million away from NM schools. The mailer Read More

Letter To The Editor: What Is The State Doing To Its Teachers?

By MARIE CHIRAVALLE
Los Alamos

What is the State doing to its teachers?

The New Mexico State Secretary of Education, Hanna Skandera, has ideas in dealing with educators that go from bad to worst. Her latest announcement, “retroactive to July 1, any teacher taking more than a three day leave will be penalized a point a day,” is a poorly conceived approach for an attendance policy.

Instead of demoralizing the teachers with punishment for taking more than a three day leave, to which there are legitimate reasons for doing so, Ms. Skandera

For as long as dinosaurs walked the Earth, flying animals called pterosaurs ruled the skies.

They ranged from the size of a sparrow to that of a two-seater plane. Close relatives of dinosaurs, these extraordinary winged reptiles—the first back-boned animals to evolve powered flight, and the only vertebrates to develop this ability besides birds and bats—are the focus of the intriguing exhibition opening at 10 a.m., Nov. 17.

The largest exhibition about these flying reptiles ever mounted in the

Letter To The Editor: Teachers Emails Spammed

By ROB and KATHY HIPWOOD
Los Alamos

As a community that places a high value on education, we urge you, regardless of your party affiliation, to vote for Stephanie Garcia Richard for House District 43. Rep. Garcia Richard has and will continue to advocate for students, schools and teachers both locally and across New Mexico. At this critical time for education, we cannot afford to lose her voice and votes.

Unfortunately, the GOP has demonstrated little support for education in our state. Teaching and learning have been devalued with an over-reliance on mandated standardized testing, hurting Read More

Letter To The Editor: A Teacher Evaluation From The Real World

By ROBERTA SORENSON
Los Alamos

It is disheartening to see outstanding teachers discouraged by soulless state evaluations.

How about a review from someone who is eminently qualified to have an opinion on the ability of Los Alamos teachers to teach. That would be me since I have had over 90 combined years in Los Alamos schools as as parent of eight and guardian for a time of two nieces.

The results that  I have observed are the ones that ultimately matter:
  • Do the kids learn and learn how to learn outside of the academic setting?
